Don't do it Eric. The only way to remove it is to break it. Why don't you just remove the inst cluster? Once it is out all the instruments/gauges come out from the back.

I am not sure what spring your talking about. In my 300TD-T, you unscrew the speedo cable, disconnect the electrical and the oil line to the oil pressure gauge and pull out the whole cluster.
Once you have the whole cluster out, there are 3 seperate gauge units that by un-screwing you remove. THen you have the 3 gauge units and the empty housing. Good Luck Don |

Eric:
There are some pictures on my website showing the assembly of the IP for the W126. The W123 will be very similar, if not identical. Each of the three instrument sets are simply screwed to the back of the cluster. WARNING: Do not remove the speedometer pointer. This is probably what you were referring to regarding a spring. A lot of these are calibrated by pre-loading the resistance/return spring. Removal of the pointer may cause loss of calibration of the speedometer. -Scott

Eric, it's not really that hard to do from the back. I had mine out 3 times over the weekend for various pueposes.
I did remove the speedometer pointer, because I needed to take it apart to fix the broken odometer. I'm happy to report that the odometer is working now, but I haven't checked the speedo calibration yet. Hopefully, that will happen this week. Once you get it out, I would recommend changing the light bulbs while you're there. After doing all my other in-dash work, I found Euro-spec bulbs at Autozone yesterday. They're in a green package at the bottom of the display. So mine will be coming out again to do the bulbs.

This job is an absolute piece of cake.
Drop the kick panel. Reach underneath and push the cluster toward the steering wheel. Loosen the thumbnut for the speedo cable and pull out. Loosen the 10MM nut for the oil pressure gauge while backing up with a 12MM on the gauge itself. Put the instrument cluster upside down on a rag that is layed out on the bench. Then just remove the speedo or instruments by removing the screws. You will NEVER find a simpler instrument panel to work on except in an old Ford pickup where four screws allow you to fold it over. Piece of cake job. Go for it. Good luck, |
