Air Compressor Question
 

My problem resides with the AC pulley on my 85 D-T.

In purchasing this car last winter, it came without an AC belt or PS belt. I was told that the AC needed recharging.

Tonight I went to put the AC belt back on and WHOA, the pulley felt like it would break off if I yanked it hard enough. Tons of play and a ton of wired goo all around it. Plus, if I moved it slightly, it seemed to catch on something. I crawled under another one (84 300D) and noticed that the problem in question was truly wierd.

Can anyone identify my problem?

Do I need a new unit or front unit?

It sounds like you are facing a much bigger problem than merely replacing the compressor. Upon compressor failure, debris is strewn throughout the system. When replacing the compressor, you MUST THOROUGHLY flush the ENTIRE system, replace the filter drier and preferably add a suction side filter in the line before the entrance to the compressor. You will then need to evacuate, and charge.

R12 will be a small fraction of the cost of this job, so I would STRONGLY recommend that you stay with R12.

Are you saying that the tons of goo that has oozed out around the pulley is indication that it is shot?

Is there such a thing as finding the compressor at a junk yard and just doing a swap & refill?

This AC stuff is new ground for me.

If all that is wrong with the compressor is a leak at the shaft seal, then your situation is not as bad. But the fact that it does not turn free by hand is what makes me worry that it has given up internally and spread metal particles throughout the system. It is these metal particles that will destroy the new compressor.

diesel don, is the clutch off of this thing? If still in place, it sounds like the clutch may be bad.

The flywheel does turn by hand. In fact, it all seems too loose. As I turn it by hand, it seems to catch on something and turn that internal thing as well.

Just by looking at it, I know it is not right, so my questions stands:

Is that unit a 'stand-alone' unit or can the forward half (pulley) be replaced, etc?
