Front speakers for W126

Has anyone replaced the front speakers on a W126? Crutchfield's says it only fits 3 1/2" while others say a flat 4x6" oval speker will fit. Any success stories out there? Any Infinity install success stories? Thanks.

4X6 replacements

edge, I replaced mine with the 4X6 Pioneer from Wally-world. Couldn't use the hold down screws, but the speaker grille holds them just fine.

Used 4X6 Blaupunkts in front by playing with the screw holes verrry little. Easy.

What did you guys use for the rear? Thanks.

I used the same 4X6 Blaupunkts in the rear;run from a few year old in-dash Blaupunkt single CD/head unit. I then added an older Jamo subwoofer isobaric single reflex bandpass enclosure (left over from redoing my home audio, so cheap!) ported with it's own tube through a hole in the bottom of the first aid kit. The subwoofer is powered by a really simple 100w. single channel amp., running off the non-powered outputs from the head unit. There are far superior set-ups to mine, but few as inexpensive, and it sounds very good on most types of music to my friends (folks who appreciate music, but are NOT high-end audiophiles).

I really feel the 126, in particular, benefits from some sort of non-directional bass (such as my simple set-up);as well, I could stand a touch of tweeter "brightening" in the front, but that will be for another time.

Did your grills fit back over the rears? I put in a set of Polk Audio's in the rear of mine, and the tweeters stick up too high. For now I'm just living with it, but it looks tacky without the grills.
I didn't really notice much, if any, sound gain with my speaker replacement. I was disappointed really. I gained a bit in the high frequency end, but other than that I can't tell any diff with any type of music. (And I THINK I have a fairly discerning ear) The speaker these cars came with have squat for low frequency reproduction, but do a pretty good job with mid and fair with the highs. I see alot of others over in the audio forum coming to the same conclusion too. Unless your going to add some big amps, it may not be worth the money and trouble to swap out. What say you who have switched the fronts? Any real gains?
Best thing I did was add a subwoofer as jbaj007 did. I used a self-powered 10" SAS Bazooka tube. Fills in real nice, although you can hear it better outside the car than inside. I need to open up the rear deck through the storage trays too.
