Thumbs up my new 240d

Last week I purchased a vehicle that I have wanted for a long time, a 1983 240d. Runs great, looks presentable, even with 289k miles. I would like to keep it running for another 300k miles. Just changed all the fluids and filters and was considering changing the timing chain. Do you have any words of wisdom in my quest for a long experience with my new toy?

No repair history came with the car.

Thanks

Diesel_shep,

Keep it out of the road salt and use Synthetic engine oil such as Delvac 1 or Mobil 1.

Diesel_shep,

I would suggest going into the archives using 240d where you will find lots of advice for the common ailments, vac leaks, glow plug light wont come on, water leaks into trunk, car explodes for no reason, just kidding. I think I had allot of the common problems with my cars and was able to deal with them with help from this group. Have the valves been adjusted? If your priming pump leaks, replace it, also check the rubber fuel lines on the driver side in the engine rm. Mine were leaking and ruined the motor mount. Also the one coming out of the fuel tank leaked. If the T chain has never been replaced it could be ready. Easy to check when adjusting valves. If more than 4 or 5 degrees change it. There are lots of things to keep an eye out for but they are great cars and worth the trouble when you get em fixed up. Enjoy

Did you change the fuel filter in the Tank ? Also, get the clear fuel filters for the small 90 degree one.. so you can watch for algae... if you see small black specs or it turns opaque treat for algae.. can ruin an engine through gradual fuel starvation....

Welcome to the MB diesel world. That was my first MB diesel. I had a VW Rabbit diesel prior.

Regarding the timing chain and tensioner rails. The MB manual has a standard for accepible chain stretch. It is a measurement of relative difference in the angles between the cam and the crank. No need to change the chain if it is in good shape or been replaced recently.

Get the manuals for the W123. It will be the best $200 or less you ever spend. The best place for those is directly from MBUSA.

Here's a link to more info:

Happy motoring!

Change oil every 3,000 miles...

This is the key to engine longevity. There are a lot of cosmetic and other products available aftermarket for the W123s from Performance Products and this site's sponsor, Fastlane. K&K and Adsit seem to have a lot of body repair panels and other stuff available. I'd join the Mercedes-Benz Club of America just for their magazine, The Star...always A LOT of content devoted to these cars, as well as classifieds for parts, service, etc.

It would be nice if someone could find and post the MB factory recommended services and intervals from when these cars were new.

It's remarkable when you realize so many of these cars have survived two decades, and the amount of information on keeping them going that has accumulated, much archieved on this forum. No such resource available for Ford Fiestas.
