Diesel Motor Oil Comparison

Not to start a debate about diesel oil but I found a nice Webpage that compares all.

Thanks, Don.

The 87 is running better and better. Yesterday morning the temp was -1 deg F and it started right up on the first crank. It has been the coldest day so far this season. I have Castrol Syntec 10W-40 in it now.

Have you been to Farm & Fleet? There is one at Exit 104. It is closing out and there are oil deals. It is only at 20% now. The one in Big rapids have lots of Mobile 1 15W-50, Chevros Delo 400 15W-40 and Mobile Delvac15W40 left. They also have the Bobile 1 gear lube and the Vavoline durablend gear lube.

The numbers from the site above basically says that the Chevron Delo 400 and Mobile Delvac are the best dino diesel oil. It seems the Delo is a bit better in pour point, flash point, and cold cranking viscosity. Rotella seems to be inferior

Hey, thanks for the oil info. I use the Mobil1 Delvac. It's a bit pricey, but my 79 SD (tmu) was so inexpensive that I figure I have room under the investment ceiling to feed her the best. I didn't realize that Amsoil was such a superior product. I will have to do some price comparisons.

BTW, where in Western MI are you? We are considering a move to the Kalamazoo area later this year. I went to the NJ meet yesterday and would hope to find a group of diesel nuts in up there in "Go Blue" country.

I am about 1.5 hours North of Kalamazoo. Diesel Don (whom I have had a ini diesel meet here in Western MI) is a little over an hour from Kalamazoo. He is in Rockford and I am in Big Rapids.

We need to get together after your move.

Interesting data. If you compare shell rotella T to Mobil Delvac 1300 super, it looks like mobil is the better product. The only number which is worse is % ash, all others appear better.

Interestingly, both are available at my local walmart, and Mobil is cheaper.

I've been using rotella t, but will be switching to Mobil Delvac 1300 super.

I've been reading a lot of the threads on oil. I am confused over synthetics. Is Mobil 1 Delvac different then regular Mobil 1. I have used both Mobil 1 and Castrol Syntech in my other gasoline cars, although I have not used it long to develop personal experience. I like the looks of the specs and the fact that it does not break down like dino oil.

I have just recently repaired all of the external oil leaks on my 240D, and I believe the oil consumption has been eliminated. Therefore, I am ready to try a synthetic. I was going to use Castrol Syntech, but after reading all of this, I am wondering if it is okay for use in Diesels? It sounds like I should be using a synthetic especially formulated for Diesels? I live in a pretty small town, and I have never seen some of the oils that others on this forum are using , like Shell Rotella & Mobil 1 Delvac???

So is Castrol Syntech 10W30 a good choice for the 240D in warm climate like Alabama?

franklyspeaking:

Mobile 1 and Mobile 1 Delvac are two different synthetic oils. Mobile 1 is for gasoline and light duty diesel engines and Delvac 1 is for heavy duty engines, gas or diesel.

Castrol Syntec does carry a CF rating so it is OK for light duty diesels.

10W-30 in AL would be too thin, IMHO. I would use 10W-40 or their 5W-50. There is one gent on this forum who uses the 5W-50 and changes at 10kmi intervals.

oil change intervals

Whats recomended oil change intervals using Synthetic? I think conventional oils are good and I dont know if I would spend the extra coin on synthetic if the interval isnt longer.

Mccan:

There are 3 diesel fanatics here in Rockford and each of us have 2 MB's. One guy just flew out to LA with his daughter (shiny new permit and 15 years old) and is picking up his 2nd off ebay for her. By the time they reach Michigan, she'll have all her hours in. Bo is up North a bit and very interested. The thing I like about it is that each of us is learning the MB system and sharing data on repair. Together with this awesome forum, we're fixing about everything.

Bo:

Thanks again for the oil data. I used to use Delvac religiously and might go back. As for the Quality Farm and Fleet, I went there but their "deals" are still more pricey than Walmart. I sense that at some point, they'll blow out the remaining inventory, but the one North of us a bit didn't look too anxious.

Thanks,

Don

Mobile Delvac oil has both dino and synthetic product lines. In the dino oil product line you can find both non-detergent and detergent oils. The synthetic are, of course, all high detergent oils.

Another oil to check out is Red Line which has oil made for diesel engines. Check out my post entitled "Motor Oil Primer" for some eye-opening specs that beat all others. Also, check out the Red Line web site for more info.

Don:

My local Farm & Fleet just increases the discount today. Oil and other lubricant is 30% off now.

Somebody bought out all the Mobile 1 gear lube.

I got some Chevron Delo 400 15-W40 for $4.89 per gallon.

The best buy is the Power Service Diesel Fuel Supplement. 96 oz bottle for $6.29 and I bought it out (total 4 big bottles in a case).

They still have some Delo left and lots of Mobile 1 15W-50. No body seems to be interested. If the discount goes up, I may buy all the inventory. They have about 8 cases (6 qt per case) and now it is $20.29 per case.

If MB is putting Mobile 1 with CF rating in the newer diesel engines, then they are contradicting themselves.

They recommend CG-4 or higher is diesels in their latest recommendation brochure I saw at the dealer.

Now some Euro Mobile 1 might be different.

It is like VW wants CH-4 and the dealer puts in CF. Probably won't hurt anything but sure is inconsistent.
