I've had three W123 wagons- and two I still own. If you own a w123 wagon and the SLS doesn't function properly- here is my advice: FIX IT. In my experience 99% of experienced and competent MB mechanics and wagon owners would agree.

The stock hydro pump produces 800 psi when operating to life up 1200 lbs which it was designed....
To change the system to electrical will require a big boost to the alternator to meet the demand ..... 12 volts times 55 amps = 660 watts There is a formular to convert watts to psi but don't know it .... my best GUESS, guess is about 100 psi ....... Bill 1981 300 TD |

We know it has been done by some folks. They have even posted here. But NOBODY has been happy with the results, or even come close to the original ride and feel. Seems like lots of bottoming out was the recurrent theme....... SLS pumps are I think in the $800 to $1200 dollar range. I got one from either here or ebay for $50 bucks for the smoker (God rest her soul). Buying accumulators are about the same price as good shocks. Rear valve assy's and the rear struts seldom fail, therefore they can be had used and fairly cheap. Cost simply shouldn't be the issue. You quality of ride and performance is the issue. Sabe???

volvo's have a system- nivomat - i beleive. it is all dependent on the shocks, no pumps or anything. of course i have never even looked at a car with this.
i have a very small hyd. pump, smaller than a tiny alternator. could be easily run off a belt. probably could work, with enough smarts and cuss's. i love my sls, and probably will pour $$$ into it when i need to. it lasted this long, a brand new part should go another decade.

Timing is such a funny thing. I finished typing the above post, then it was time for the nightly wrestling session with my 9 year old daughter. The wife is at Garden Ridge scouting fake Christmas trees. (yes, I'm gettin to the point )
She called me and said this guy working there through the holiday season that she was talking to works at a local wrecking yard. Seems they just got a 300TD in today. It has to go through the fluid removal process and then will be put out in the yard. First, good scouting job by the wife, who hates to even have to ride in my wagon. She had asked him a lot of questions prior to calling me. Of course, some of those were about getting rid of my parts car situation too..... Little does she know I'm emailing with someone right now who has a 240D with bad motor. Project 300D might be severely modified, even requiring a name change........(Hmmm, project 240D. Has a nice ring to it.....)

Sedan springs ('77 230) and Bilstein HD's.
If you've done a search, you've seen this recipe before. It works, and the car handles better. The wagon I've got now has functional SLS. It handles like crap. As soon as the SLS goes south (only a matter of time) I'm going to remove it.
Jay.

Clarification for n00bs reading this thread.
The car leathermang mentions in this thread as being sans-SLS from the factory is not a correct statement.
I closely examined this car about 3 years ago and it sports a set of either Gabriel or Monroe shocks with, rather crudely manufactured home made upper mounts. All the steel SLS tubing is still in place in the engine compartment and at the back. It is obviously an attempt at substituting a 'close enough' shock for a working SLS. This car had SLS from the factory.

Don't you just really miss all that condescension??? *btw, as Randy stated, I spent some time underneath that car one day, and it was definitely an SLS conversion to shocks/springs. I know this for a fact because the rear valve assy from it is out in my garage....

Love to hear more about this. There are several things you can do to improve the wagon handling that have nothing to do with changing the SLS.

I have looked at both the TD and the D/SD heads, and I think it would be possible to machine in the boss on a standard head to support the TD pump... the casting looks like it was made this way. does anybody think it would be possible?
