E300 surging problem

My E300 95 now has a surging problem, but only between 2100 and 2500 rpms. If you step on the throttle it does not do it. It only does it on light load or when you are starting to coast. Very annoying. I just got it back from the dealer and it runs smooth. Im sure its not injection related, because it cuts on and off almost instant in rapid succession. Any ideas would be appreciated THANKS

Surging has been a common complaint on the 95-97 E300. The 98 and 99 turbo models of the 606 engine don't seem to have this problem. Maybe something in the turbo charging process fixed it. I can't recall what the fix was/is for the problem but maybe a search under "surging" might turn up some answers.

Thanks for your reply

I am going to try and dissconnect the resonance flaps vacuum and see what happens. I'm not quite sure what the overvoltage relay does. I will just replace it if the vacuum doesn't work.
A friend has the exact car and is having the same problem. Just want to pay another $800 for adjustments.

When I picked up my 96 E300 from Donnie he told me I would probably experiance this from time to time. He indicated that it is a glitch in the ECM, unfortunatly the ECM is about $1200.00 so if it happens to mine I will live with it. Just speed up or slow down some.

This same problem was reported in the MBCA Star Magazine Tech Forum some time ago, I can't recall the issue date. The ECU is the problem- the software was updated at some point to address the surging that occurs when letting up on the gas or coasting, and can be retrofitted to affected cars. If you are out of warranty, I'm afraid you're S.O.L.- it is expensive...unless you find a sympathetic service writer and have a long-standing relationship with the dealership.

Only the 96 and 97 E300D W210 cars had the updated IFI ECU.
In the 94 and 95 W124 cars, the system was pretty much mechanical and vac. controls. The only control module for these was the idle speed control unit. My expirience with the 94/95's
that surge was sticking resonance flaps or too much EGR which
was usually leaking. Pluged ports for the MAP/Boost pressure
sensors can cause havoc on all late model diesel Benzes.
The updated Diesel ecu for the 96/97's lowered the amount of EGR and duration of on time.

EGR is no longer connected via plugging vacuum hose. Will doing the same on the resonance flaps cause any adverse problem?
