The S400 CDI is coming to the states for 2004!

I had a verbal confirmation from my dealer today that in fact the S400 was able to pass emissions standards in the united states and that it is coming over for 2004! Imagine, a 200hp + diesel V8! In a Mercedes! Also coming is the 2004 S350, that is S350, not S320. Not to fear my diesel friends it is not a diesel. I believe it is a 3.7 litre V6 from chrysler, and it is gasoline. Not that nightmare of a motor from the early 90's. I can't wait until next year!

A Chrysler engine in the S-class. That'll be a marketing nightmare.

Isn't the engine in the ML350 a development of the original M112? Wouldn't that be a reasonable engine for the S350?

I'll have to keep saving.. maybe I can finance an S400 next year..

No on the Chrysler engine stuff.

the Daimler part has always said they would never soil the Mercedes brand by putting a Chrysler engine in a mercedes.

the new engine is just a modification of the 3 valve per cylinder design that the current V6's and V8's use.

And I highly doubt the stuff about the S400 coming to the states. Mercedes has said in 2004 they'll have an E320 CDi sedan for 2004 but not in every state.

Will the E320 CDi ever get the AWD version?

I think it will be available in CT, which means that I will buy it in 2007 when they start to roll off their initial leases.

I'll wait untill they put a turbocharger on it:D

Have not heard about the S400 CDI, but I did hear from the sales guy at the local dealership that MB has started testing to meet all 50 states' emissions requirements and if the E320 CDI passes these tests it will be sold across the country. Previously they were only going to certify the car for 46 or 47 states.

Jim Anderson,

You can stop waiting, it is a Common rail, Direct injection, Intercooled turbocharger set up.

edge,

The ML is available in the 270 CDI and 400 CDI variants at present, so the AWD system integration efforts required has been done on those. There are no 4-Matic E Class (W211) models available yet, and there are no Diesel S Class 4-Matic models available either (although you can get an "S" in the 350, 430 and 500 flavors with 4-Matic in the Fatherland). So, if the Diesels sell, they may spawn other models, like 4-Matic versions and AMG versions over here. I heard rumors that AMG is working the 3.2 and 4.0 CDI engines over for the German and other markets. They already did the 2.7 and turned it into a 3.0 AMG that is available in the 'C" over there.

Great news, hope they sell! Jim
