I am not really a tool freak, but, I must say that the official MB / Hazet drain plug wrench mentioned by Rick Miley is a thing of beauty. (Actually it's a 13mm oil drain wrench & 14mm hex wrench). One of the reasons why people are always talking about removing differential plugs using breaker bars and sledge hammers is because their Autozone hex wrench doesn't fit the hole properly. The proper tool fits perfectly so removing the drain plug is easy. Also, there are some MB models where access space is limited (transmission fill on some models) where a conventional socket based hex wrench will not fit. The official Hazet wrench ought to be in every MB owners tool kit in my opinion. Spend the $33 and get the real tool. It's well worth it.

I made my own from either a 3/8" or 1/2" (don't remember) bolt and welded a nut on the other end. Works perfectly.

I just got a heavy duty 14mm hex for $14.70 but
it would be a little cheaper w/o MD sales tax, but then there is shipping. www.distributortool.com, I guess there are cheaper ones to be had, but don't feel confident that since Auto Zone has one for less it is therefore a good place to buy other parts such as electronic components. |
