Where can I buy the tool?

I am changing my diff oil and was wondering where to get the "allen wrench" to take out the plugs. Is it sold in a 1/2 drive?
I tried a number of places already with no success. Any good online stores?

Sears probably has it, but so do most auto stores like Advance/Pep Boys, etc.. Just call them first. I've only ever seen them in 3/8" though, but they may have 1/2".

Mercedes sells a special wrench that has a 17mm box on one end for the oil drain plug, and a 14mm allen on the other end for the diff. Part number 000 589 24 07 00 and about $33 on Fastlane.

Sears isn't showing any single bit larger than 10mm. I bought mine as part of a set of about 4 or 5 at Poop Boys. The price was very low - under $20. Now somebody will chastise me for buying cheap Chinese tools. Oh, mine is 3/8.

edit: that should be Partsshop, not Fastlane.

$20
Try pawn shops. If you can find an old one with lots of hand tools (usually the junkiest looking pawn shop around) you can pick one out of a bin for a buck or so.

$20

That was for a set! Sure beats paying more than $10 for a single bit at Sears or $33 for the fancy special wrench. But just because you said something, I'll check the actual price when I get home. Under $20 was from my (somewhat faulty) memory.

I like the pawn shop idea, though.

Try this from SNAP-ON Tools. You can buy from ON-line.
I am not sure if this is the tool for your differential oil plugs:

I bought a big allen wrench (hex wrench) in a tool supply store, it was just a tiny bit too big being a non-Metric item so I hit all 6 sides with a belt sander until it fit, it didn't take much to get it to fit. And it was relatively cheap. I don't remember how much, but I am sure it was less than a socket drive from SnapOn. I place a 3-foot length of EMT over the end and just lean on it and the plug comes out easily.

I bought a 3 piece set at Autozone for $14.99. Has a 14mm and a larger and a smaller size. Fit on a 1/2" ratchet/breaker bar. RT

I think you get the idea. Do a Google search for "17mm hex"

Oops is it 14mm!! just do a search for that.

Just found the receipt. 3 piece set from AutoZone includes 12, 14, and 17mm bits for $7.99. 1/2 inch drive. I used the 14mm on my diff last night and it worked great.

Grainger has em

I got my 14mm allen from grainger for six bucks, but you have to be some kind of business to buy from them, so unless you're self employed, i dunno. If you can buy from grainger though, they have anything and everything much cheaper than retail.
