With energy prices I may break the $500 dollar mark. Hopefully not higher. And I don't even use the unit for the back of the house. We've shut that area down.....

Not exactly... I finally found a Nippondenso that would hold refrigerant, installed it, jumpered the Klima and was in the middle of charging the beast when it sprung a leak somewhere (I think the high-side hose fitting popped off the condenser but, it was dark, I was pissed, and the mosquitos were about to haul me away) . That was in late April. I gave up for a while...then, Thing One was in town and needed a ride for the duration. I think the only times I saw that car from May to mid June was when the oil pan got smacked or it was at the farm.

Since early May it's been a**holes and elbows at the farm, trying to get the cabin project to a point where the framers can go at it. ...footings, concrete, underground utilities. Yikes!

Anyway, we finally got the hut project there this Monday and the floor is complete...well, almost. I'm at work tonight using my fast computer to finish some working drawings so that the framers can get the walls in the right places and the windows will all fit.

Want to come live in my wellhouse? 135°F on the roof, 85°F inside. With an a/c in there, you'd need a coat.

Adam, that's funny!

Did you find that online or take it yourself? I would think you'd have to live somewhere south of Michigan before considering that mod, lol.

A friend of mine found it out somewhere on the interweb and sent it to me. I thought this was the perfect thread to post it on.

FWIW, I have two cars that were converted to R134a from R12, so they already have the PAG oils in them.

The heat & humidity of Florida is TOO MUCH, so I've converted them to ES-12a.

Both have gone over year, and the temp are cooler than R134a and the pressures are lower.

I just spent a good part of the morning reading this thread. It was good reading.

I have 134 in one of my 6.9 and it blows really cool. It has a new condenser, new servo and new hoses.

It really works great.

My other 6.9 runs fresh R12 and it's cool but not as cool as the 6.9. That's with a new condenser. But it does have a problematic acc servo.

I do remember when buying the condenser that it came in a box with big bold writing that said WARRANTY VOID UNLESS R12 OR R134 IS USED.

I'm not against the alternatives, but I do know that R134 works perfectly well in older cars such as the W116 when it's been converted properly.

A more correct statement would be that it works perfectly well in YOUR older car such as the W116 when converted properly. Not all older systems are equal, they may have more or less condenser capacity, etc. And the climate where you live will affect performance, and personal preference as to what constitutes "acceptable AC performance", since it's pretty subjective. In general, the 134a conversions are less efficient, run higher system pressures, cause extra strain on system components, require more HP from the engine, and are in no way superior to R-12. But that's all irrelevant if the conversion works, and you're happy with it!

For me, that would be 107 degree summers in Dallas, TX. I did not do the conversion on this 6.9 I bought it that way and I wasn't a believer until I saw it for myself. This car was done right and this system blows ice cold.

I was cleaning the engine from some excess hydraulic fluid from a loose line to the suspension pump and the water froze solid as soon as it hit the a/c lines.

I think that a lot of people 'convert' to R134 by pulling a vac and then dropping R134 in place and then complain that it doesn't work. This car had a new condenser, hoses, dryer and I suspect a new expansion valve and it works really well.

I like R12, I have more then 150lbs of R12 sitting here and I use it on my other 6.9 and on my 450SLC. The converted 6.9 performs just as well if not better then my R12 cars (anyone in Dallas is welcome to stop by and try it).

I'm not saying that people should move off R12, if you have a working, leak free system, there is no reason to. I'm just saying that if you're planning to convert away from R12, then R134 is probably as good as any and better then most if done properly and it wont void your warranty.
