AC Compressor Clatter

My clutch is making quite a loud rattle. It goes away when the compressor engages.

Does anyone know if this can be repaired or do I need to replace the compressor?

Thanks

As leathermang says, since the noise GOES AWAY when the clutch engages, the compressor internals are not likely to be the problem.

This is even a question on the ASE test.

Good luck,

Make sure the belts are tight.

The belt is tight, but the clutch is shot. The compressor is original, so I think I will replace the whole shebang before it goes too. Thank goodness I can salvage the R12. Bought a rebuilt for $110.

Install this weekend maybe..
