240D/300D Manual flywheel

I've heard varying reports on to whether the 240D and the 300D will take the same standard shift flywheel. Some tell me they're the same and others say the 300D is externally balanced where the 240D isn't. Can anyone conferm this and if so, does anyone out there have a 300D standard shift flywheel they want to part with?

Thanks

jim

They are not the same. The 300d is a thicker flywheel. However, if you search on the threads about converting an auto to manual I believe you will find a comment by 'Ridge' indicating that he ran a 300d manual with a 240d flywheel for a while.

You could probably find a new 300d flywheel here:

Flywheels

Kerry,

300D flywheels are rarer than chicken lips, but a 300d from the earlier models will work. At least one guy on this forum is running with a turbo using a 240D flywheel.

I personally ran mine for 18 months with a 110 flywheel aaand had no apparent problem. By all means search for the 300D and whichever one you use line up the balance marks on the flywheel with the one on the crank.

I am glad someone appreciates how rare chicken lips are... I have been saving mine for months to get a matched pair.. and will be putting them up for auction on Ebay as soon as they are salt cured...

I am supposing that the Europeans like chicken lips more than us Americans. Is it correct that there were more 300d manual transmissions over there? If so, the European parts supplier I posted should be able to get a new one. Alternatively, a European salvage yard may have one. You may even be able to find one out of one of the light commerical vans that used the 617 engine. When I do the search on that site and click on 'flywheel', it shows a part but it names it 'ring gear' so I suspect it may not be a manual flywheel.

When I searched for my 240d 123123..... it acted like it was going to 'go there'... but it actually only listed others... like gaser engines..

In Europe manual transmissions were ' almost' standard ( pun)...way more than here...and professionally refurbished ones should be available off the shelf....

Leathermang:
Pick the 200-280E, click Go, and then it will give you the choice of 240d or 300d along with a lot of others.

Click on change vehicle. Pick Mercedes passenger cars. Pick the year, then click go. Then get the drop down menu and pick 123. Click go. Then get the drop down menu and click on 200-280E. Click Go. Then get the drop down menu again and pick either the 240 or 300d. I think you aren't taking the last step to get the choice for those diesels.
