Talking First oil change

just recently purchased a prestine 1997 E300 D with 58k miles- dessert silver-- totally in love with it. Question is I'm fixing to ask my wife to buy some Delvac oil from Costco. How much oil should I ask her to buy???? Costco is 50 miles away, that's why we need to get everything we need in less trips as possible....Thanks

Get two gallons. Don't forget to change the filter as well.

Good luck,
Change oil hot and change oil often.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pease don't buy regular Delvac for that car. What you're looking for is Mobil Delvac-1. It is a fully synthetic oil that is rather hard to find, and I guarantee they won't have it at Costco. To locate it, you could go to Mobil's web site and find a local distributor, or buy it online here: http://www.avlube.com

A good alternative, which I personally use, is Amsoil Heavy Duty Marine and Diesel oil (also a full synthetic) available here: http://www.lubespecialist.com or here: http://www.amsoil.com

Didn't know that.......

Thank goodness that I consulted with you guys over this... Didn't know that Delvac can come in conventional and synthetic as well
Thankyou for the info guys!! But is there anything over the counter brand that I would be able to get and still feel good about , using it? If not, then I guess I have to order the Delvac Synthetic brand. Appreciate it !!

Arrrgh. Now I'm going to start another oil war. Shell Rotella and Chevron Delo are the most often metioned dino oils on the board and are usually available at Wal-Mart. You're looking for an oil with a minimum CG-4 rating, and the current rating is CI-4.

Forgive my ignorance, but does the 97 have the Flexible Service System and, if so, are you going to follow it? If yes, then you definitely must use a fully synthetic oil. If you're going to change it more often, then a dino oil would do.

I think dino oils are fine in the older cast iron diesels, but the OM606 definitely deserves synthetic. You bought a very special car - it deserves a little special treatment.

Although synthetic Delvac would be better, regular Delvac will do fine if you change it often enough.

Good luck,

I got Delvac 1 from the Mercedes-Benz dealership. It's their synth. oil of choice for diesels.

oil change indicator

Rick Miley:

No, unfortunately it didn't come with that option. It's NOT turbo either. A bit slow but coming form a 4-cylinder non -turbo volvo 740, she( my wife) can acually feel more torque in this 6cylinder diesel engine .

L Bible:

Thanks for the recommendation. I do believe that someone also told me that reg Delvac is also a good product to use in this particular engine.

I highly recommend the MANN, Hengst, or Knect filters which are OEM for your car. This site has them for $5-7 each. I buy several at a time and always have one on the shelf. If you think the engine is slightly noisy, etc, I have found that synthetic will make things quieter. I had the OM606 that you have for a short time and this was my experience using syn (previous oil was non-syn 15w-40).

Enjoy your new car,

Larry over does it on the change routine, I over do it on the oil quality. Just make sure you do at least one of them.

Ditto the recommendation on buying filters here.

Larry answered your original question, which was two gallons, but I want to elaborate. The spec is 7.5 quarts, so don't just dump it all in. Do about 6 or 6.5 and measure. Also when filling, direct the flow toward the front of the engine so the oil runs down the timing case. If you follow instinct and point it towards the back, it can overflow into #1 and create either a hydrolock or a runaway if you start it too soon. This is a known problem on the OM606 and has been discussed here before.

BTW, Larry and Greg, I'm trying that new Valvoline Maxlife for a short time on the 240D to see if it will soften the valve stem seals. After that I'm going to switch it to Amsoil synthetic.

If you are going to use Mobil 1, then 0w-40 and 15w-50 are the ONLY suitable viscosities. Mobil's 0w-30, 5w-30, and 10w-30 are TOO THIN - MBUSA will tell you the same!

Rick,

The esters in Amsoil will probably do better with your valve seals than MaxLife.

Yes, you can use "regular" Mobil 1, but don't expect the same extended drain interval that you normally would with a synthetic oil. It does not have the soot dispersing capacity of a dedicated Diesel engine oil. It carries a CF rating, while Mercedes-Benz specifies a CG-4 for the OM606.

Chris Ecklund brought this to my attention when I did my first oil change and told him that I used M-1. When I changed it for Delvac-1 the engine was noticeably quieter and sounded "happier".

Hey, thanks Brian. You're probably right about that. But the stuff is already in there so I'm going to go ahead and run it for 3000.
