1981 Td

Good morning, my buddy bought a Td with a non working tranny.
Previous owner said it is the B2 piston that is stuck.
My buddy drooped down the tranny last night. we will be working on it, I have a Haynes manual and it doesn't cover it, what is a good resource for rebuilding this tranny? Is there a manual on cd for sale?
After dropping the tranny, he tried to start the engine, no glow plug light and no starter. Any tips on what to look for? Fuse?
I didn't help him out last night as I was watching as my Lakers got whooped by the Spurs. Oh well, next year.
Ok, any tips on how to trouble shoot his car is much appreciated. Will take a look this weekend and give a clearer picture to his TD.
Sixto, yup we bought the white TD.

Check the archives. There's a webiste that sells tranny rebuild manuals for MBs.

If the tranny is out, I wouldn't try starting the engine since there's no rear mount. You might damage the radiator necks or throttle linkage even with the bell housing flange resting on a jackstand.

Thanks a lot Sixto. Will checkout the links you gave.

no start

To remove the tranny, he pulled the in-gear lock out switch electrical connector. It prevents starting the car in gear, which these diesels are capable of if you by pass the switch. Don't ask how I know. The connection is necessary to energize the starter circuit.

trans out

wagonboy,

You might want to do a search on this site for Conversion to manual transmission. I think you'd find the results definitely more exciting than reinstalling your old slip and slide.

The B2 piston is under a cover on the upper passenger side of the tranny. It is usually broken into pieces inside the cover. Repair consists of removing the cover and replacing the piston, seals, and cover seal.

Rebuild manuals are scarce for the MB trannies -- ditto for someone who can actually make one work by rebuilding it.

They are more complex than a typcial Ford or GM, and are very difficult to rebuild correctly -- by the time they go out, a simple clutch and seal replacement won't fix them, they usually need some gears, housings, and thrust washers as well. Mind you, this is in the 300,000 mile range, at least three times as long as a Ford or GM will last.

Thanks for the reply everyone. Ridge, the TD is the one owned by Dean, he said you came out to take a look at it but passed on it. Will check out the manual tranny conversion.
We'll try to sort out the stsrting problems once my buddy sorts out the tranny. Thanks again.

The starter mounting bolts pass through the trans. housing. Did you put shorter bolts through only the adapter? If so, is the adpter strong enough without the support of the tranny? These starters make a lot of power.

Transmission problems

wagonboy,

I passed on the wagon because of the clear coat peeling. If you wanted to convert to a manual transmission, there is a guy parting out a 240D on either "Cars" or "Parts" thread here that I suggested he put together a conversion kit from his car. The only thing you'd need different would be a 300D or 300d flywheel obtainable from Silver Star in Oakland.

If the propeller is rattling, I'd check the bushings in the transom...heh heh;)
