Bad Engine Mounts
My 300D is vibrating, it feels like its through the frame.
Also when I turn it on or off the engine really feels like it shakes alot. Do I need engine Mounts? How can I tell? Wayne

What year and model? Some of these have engine shocks that are designed to minimize engine shake at shutdown.
Most old MB diesels will see a benefit with new motor mounts. I installed new motor mounts in my 300SD last week and have seen a nice improvement. Less shaking at idle. I have the new engine shocks to replace next. I noticed at least one of them had the mounting torn loose. Have to replace the shocks and the mount kit on these now. They come as seperate parts. |

strange experience with bad engine mounts
My 82' 240d does a serious jig when I shut her down, however, I can't say it is rough at idle. Engine mounts would certainly be on my list of "future projects" if I was sure they were original. Engine was rebuilt by PO, (replacement parts list is in German)
Quick story: I was driving my 72' 250 and hit a speed bump in a parking lot, (I was in a rush that day). Next thing I knew my radiator was leaking. Turned out, my engine mounts were so soft, the entire engine must have pivoted so hard when I hit that speed bump, that the fan blades actually made contact with the radiator and tore a few of the rows apart. had to get new radiator (and mounts) Thinking back about that incident, I think I will add them to my list (incl. trans.mts) Is the job difficult? |

Edge
The replacement on my 81 300SD was not very difficult. Took about an hour. There are two or three? allen head screws on the top of the mounts, and one larger allen headed screw underneath. The topside screws are not hard to remove, there is one on the inside that has some access problems. The large screw under the frame can take some effort to remove. You need to go through a hole in the frame to get to it. It sits in the center of the mount itself. Use a good light to locate it. The problem is that it is set into aluminum. It gets stuck easily. I used an electric impact driver to loosen it. I just let the wrench rattle on the bolt for several minutes, then I used a breaker bar to get it out. Be carefull not to round out the bolt head. I have unbolted a couple of these mounts and seems there is at least one bolt in there that can take a while to loosen. I replaced them with anit-seize compound. Should come out easier next time. Oh, did I mention you need to raise the motor after the bolts are loose? |
