126 front swaybar bushing R&R tips wanted
 

I want to replace the swaybar bushings...the ones that connect to the upper control arms and the big ones attached to the body.

I can't get a clear idea of exactly how best to tackle this from any searches so I'm asking now. What should be my game plan?

I am surprised you have not gotten a response to this post. I might also need to replace my front stabilizer bushings as I sence a rattle I can feel through the steering system although tyhe rubber seems to be in good shape and fits tight. I only have 87k miles on the SDL but I have a rattle coming from somewhere in the front end. The rattle was amplified when I increased my front tire pressure from 28psi to 32psi. Made a huge difference and now I can feel all the features of the road surface.

I changes my rear stabilizer links and a rattle coming from the rear end disappeared.

Hopefully someone who has changed front stabilizer bushings will reply.

I will tell you what I know. I have a 86 300SDL and just did the 82 300TD.
To get to the sway bar mount bushings you will have to remove the brake booster on the left of the car. Look down between the brake booster and the fuse box. that metal plate that the sway bar goes through is the mount. To get to it you will remove the brake booster. The other side of the sway bar has the mount located under the battery. You will have to remove the battery, battery tray and washer fluid container. This allows you to remove and replace the sway bar mount bushings.
The sway bar to upper control arm bushing MAY and I mean MAY be removable by unbolting the sway bar mounts and seeing if you can move the sway bar out of the upper control arm (UCA) this may allow out to unbolt the sway bar from the UCA, remove the bushings and install the new ones. IF this does not allow you to remove the sway bar towards the rear enough to slide the rearmost bushing off the sway bar then you will have to remove the coil springs so that you can move the UCA forward enough to do this job. I rebuilt the entire suspension in the 300TD so everything was apart which allowed easy assembly. The last thing installed was the coil spring.
I know that my "experience" was on the 123 but looking at my 126 the job seems very simular. The sway bar is located between the 2 firewalls. But the design is the same as the 123
