pre filter??
1995 E300D
150,000 miles Per the shop mech this model only has a main fuel filter, and not a pre filter. I've been told that it has both the pre and main fuel filter. So I ask all that know........who is correct?

My best guess...
is that it has a pre-filter or an in line filter. Diesel fuel tanks collect water and algea developes, which in the older diesels was collected in a "pre filter" it is a small 90 degree in-line filter somewhere before the main filter. Follow the fuel line! You will find the answer.
If your vehicle only has a 'main' filter, it will need to changed more often. You may be able to splice the line and install a prefilter! thebern

Your mechanic is wrong. There certainly is a prefilter on this engine.
See if you can locate the main filter. There is a large bolt that holds the main filter to the aluminum housing; the bolt head is visible on the top of the housing. The pre-filter is located just to the inside (towards the valve cover) from this large bolt. The pre-filter is also inside the aluminum housing; it's held down by a C shaped piece of metal, which is held down by a bolt with a 10mm head. If you replace the pre-filter, be SURE to replace the rubber o-ring. It usually doesn't come with the pre-filter, you have to buy it seperately. Gilly |
