Looks like a nice driver. Love the "Adult Videos" sign in the background of the pics. Nothing says class like that.... RT

How does the W116 compare to the W126 SD? I think they are the same engine. How's the suspension, road feel and "fun to drive" factor? Where are the W116 owners out there? Time to defend your car! Why say you, VirginiaDude?

Knowing what we know about 116's and rust, buying one out of Pennsylvania sure doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

116's and rust

Difficult call. It's a beautiful car, same exterior color as my 79 280S. Sure brings back memories, including those of quite staggering rust. And as a Mercedes service advisor once told me, in a heavy german accent... "On these cars it's not the rust you can see that's the problem!"

The mileage also seems a tad low especially with the discrepancy between the front and rear seat condition which makes me wonder. But at the same time, I LOVE 116's and would probably prefer one to a 126 if they were in similar shape.

Edge,

I would want to do a complete undercar inspection checking for rust, oil leaks and exhaust system condition. These are conditions that can not be seen in the pictures.

Since the car is from PA, I would be expecially leery of rust. Without inspecting the car, you might be better off looking for a southern car.

13 years ago I bought a '80 300SD. Even though it was from NC, I ran it up on ramps and crawled under it looking mainly for rust. It is still rust free because it goes onto hibernation every winter. That is the only to prevent rust from salt covered roads.

I'm all worn out singing the praises of the 79 SD. Superior driver in every respect. Lots of archived blather on the subject. The Back Seat condition IS NOT A MATTER OF WEAR! In many of the Mercedes of this era an adhesive was used in the construction of the seats that ended up destroying the hosehair inserts. Not cheap or easy to repair. I went to the salvage yard and found good seats and then swapped upholstery.

This 116 was the platform for the 450 6.9 litre Mercedes muscle car. You get some awesome handling, stability, ride and response from this car. The throttle setup and transmission predate the later (81 -85) models. The throttle is much more responsive. The transmission and differential are geared a bit lower so that you have fantastic pick up without sacrificing comfort at highway speed.

Oh yeah, beware the red manace. Get pics of this "minor" rust.

The price may get quite high with so many bidders looking to grab this one. If the mileage is correct it may well be worth it. The car, at that mileage, will outlive a it's next two owners.
