off roading with a MB Diesel

If anyone cares to know.... my 5cyl Turbo D worked flawless when offroading this weekend. The Throttle linkage on the body.... well thats a different storry. It would pull on the linkage on the engine and tug the throttle.

Pics and story here

Places like that....... bwahahahaha......... Wellsville is NOTHING compared to what I'm use to..... I cryyyyyyyyyy thinking of where I use to go wheeling only hours from my house. (in a jeep TJ) I use to live two hours from the Rubicon and only minutes from good off roading just out side of town.

anyway..... closest places for you to check out Mogs is in GA. Eurotruck and SORV are both near you. Little further up in Rhode Island is Off Road Imports, and in NY is Unimogs East.

You can find info on them and others here . Tell them George the moderator from Pirate4x4.com sent tya.

Hey how about some pics of that thing driving over stuff or in some really rough terrain? Cool truck! How fast are they? Will they cruise "comfortably" on the highway? How loud? Thanks, RT

pics of the mog comming soon. Hard to take pics of the rig while in the rig. Like the Pirate pic thread stated. I'll have more pics of the mog when others gets their film developed.

How fast??. mine is faster than average and I "average" mayyyybe 50mph on the normal road cause of the 617 transplant. It is a VERY spendy transplant and gains u mayyyybe 10mph, butttttt... dont cruise much past 50 for hours cause it will help cause tranny failure.

Think TRACTOR. Tranny, engine, axles etc. is not built for highway speed. Most mog enthusiast tow their mogs to places on trailers.

"What you say" "Come for Billy?" "What about being proud?" "huh?" what?"....... " SPEEK UP SON.......I CANT HEAR YOU over the noise" "WELL I CANT LEAN OVER CLOSER to hear"... "my back is killing me from driving":p

Scary is relative to what, where and how you drive. Walking can be scary if your not wise

grew up in Delaware Ohio still have family farm there. Off roading here means transversing old cat roads and logging roads grades to make you hair stand on end 1000 foot drop offs, have owned 5 4x4S and of course an old 240 D won't keep up with a CJ but you might be suprised were they will go.........

Sounds fun William. I bet ur really learning some offroading skills in your 240D. The real drivers are the ones who learn to drive the ol "run what tya brung" rigs. I've seen some smooth driving from such folk.... course some balls to the walls driving from some of them in their beaters too though.

Skid plates sound wise buttttt.. make sure ur not creating a PLOW to push mud rocks etc. Could make things worse. I made that mistake on my Jeep. I put on nice little skids on my diffs and in the snow they acted like skies. They skied me up to the top of the snow and left all 4 tires spinning. I couldnt go anywhere. In the rocks they are GREAT. Didnt get into much mud (I was in NV, CA then) .. they may have caused the same ski up effect which would be a problem.

Have fun hunting.

Pics updated. It was requested so now it has more shots of the Mog. If you looked before the Mog shots are now mixed in with the original post as well as a few more tagged to the end.

So go check it out.

*drooling* I want one...I'd always wanted another IH Scout to play in the dirt in, but I think you've just about sold me on getting a 'Mog instead...or, maybe, have both

This may sound weird, but do you have any interior/dash shots?
Also, if the OM617 was transplanted in there, what engines did these beasts normally come with? What's it got for a tranny?

Thanks!

p.s. In case you're interested, I posted a link to your pic thread on the "other" site that I go to (for the Nimitz)...

Thanks on posting a link where ever you posted it.

Interior... THINK TRACTOR (Mine pictured is modified about third more the # of gauges),

Factory engine in a 404: M180 gas motor is what was most common. M 130 can be found too I think. Im still stuffing my brain with Mog info so I may be off on the M130.

Tranny: Specific to Unimog. Big hawking 6 speed/Tcase, Torque Tubed and LOW GEARED. They are known to burn up used at highway speeds, they are not designed for.

Dumb question, but is this 6 speed an automatic or a manual gearbox? I didn't see a gearshift lever in the picture, but my eyes suck. And from how you described it, the tranny and transfer case is a single unit? Is the transfer case a single-speed or a two-speed (i.e. super-granny low)?

I LOVE THAT DASH! Gotta love all the switches and gauges...

I wonder how hard it would be to put a 6BT Cummins in there?

bwahahahaha..... lets see........ hmmmm..... let me count the "Manuel" *shift sticks between the two seats
1,,,,,, hmmm 2,3, oh and 4, 5..... and there is that one too... that's 6... ahhh yeah.... that one.. that makes 7 levers, Yup... Just seven shifting sticks. 3 of them are for the tranny alone. (**I have 3 more sticks total than most cause of modifications)

T-Case is integral and its what ever gears ya got in the tranny is what ya got in the T-case. buttttt... THINK TRACTOR.... this things first gear is so low I could get out and walk backward and beat the mog to where ever it is creeping forward toward. Course there is an additional two crawler gear set available that is even lower. With it... it might not be able to leap a tall building in a single bound.. but it sure could drive right up the wall and down the other side. Better make that a skyscraper wall...... it will already do the building wall with the gears its got.

Matters how good you are at reading German !!

every tried putting a lawnmower engine in a model airplane...... Its about the same. The 5cyl Turbo D is the cats meow of transplants in the Mog 404 and it Barely fits. You have to tilt it 13 degrees off to one side to shoe horn it in there. Unless u just junk the body and start with something new., but any more HP than that and ulll eat transmisions, clutches, ... probably both.

* Gear shift lever,
2. High & Low range shifter (actually giving me 8 gears .... with 4 in Low in forward and Rev, and 4 gears High. two of the gears (3rd and 4th) are used in both the High and Low range.**
3. Forward & Reverse stick
4. PTO stick**
5. Parking brake stick
6. 4wd Activater stick and rear locking differential (2 positions of stick)
7. Front differential, locker stick**

If I got the crawler gear set and added that.. that would actually add another stick too.
