The Benz Bin / Parts Quality
 

Last night I diagnosed the klunk in the rear of the 240 as being a bad driver's side axel. This is the rebuilt axel that I bought from the thebenzbin and put in about 30k ago. Although I enjoy working on my cars, replacing a rear axel is not something to do every 30k.

Has anyone else had problems w/ benzbin parts and/or do you reccomend parts from fastlane, mercedes source, etc?


Oddly enough, the rear diff w/ 560k+ and the other rear axel w/ 300k+ were in pretty good shape.

I have used the benz bin on a few occasions and not had any real problems. They are a good amount less expensive on somethings and ship for free on orders over $50. But I have not ordered major replacement rebuilt parts from them (ie, axel, alternators). All of the parts I have gotten from them have been new.

I would place them as my second supplier behind the dealer.

Rebuild axles are junk- doesn't matter where you get them. Only exception is a lobro remanufacture axle. Everyone else is extrude-honing the "race" in the axle and putting in oversize ball bearings. Considering case hardening by either carborization or nitrating is thing(order or 0.005-008)- your left with a normilized race instead of hardened steel. Crap for life.

Rusty sells rebuilts from Worldpac with a 12,000 mile warrentee. Yea for $250!!


Talk to fastlane and buy a NEW axle. Should set you back $300-350, but will last just like the orginals. Actually, they will be the newer style like the W124's have. I purchased mine new one from the benzbin, but I don't see them listing them anymore.

Some people have had luck with used... mine experience with used W123 axles is about as good as rebuilt axles.

I buy everything from The Benz Bin.. they are based out of NJ and my parts usually come overnight. Everything I've gotten from them has been excellent with no problems.. starters, alternators, etc. Every rebuildable item I got from them has been rebuilt by Bosch.

I always have recieved good service from them, I was just a little concerned after the axel failure. But it seem it is more of a problem w/ the nature of rebuilt axels.

I agree with Turbodiesel, I have been using the Benz Bun for the past five years without any problems. So far the parts and advise have all been without problem.

Wow, this thread is very refreshing. I am glad to see that the moderators have not stepped in to shutdown this positive discussion of a competitor. I have seen that happen far too often on many other forums.

Rude awakening.

My friend ordered parts from benzbin and fell for their false advertising.
He also got a part he did not order. Of course, he now has to deal with the run around for returning it.

benzbin is now a part of a CON-glomerate. thepartsbin.com and other websites....***********************.... alloempartsinc.com ..they charge sales tax as well.

I prefer the Fast Lane myself. No lawyers needed. NO sales tax(just ordered and received next day !!):D

Actually CVJ rebuilt axles are pretty good. They don't grind the hardness off and only use the best cores. I have them in my car, 20k no problems. Naturally new would be better providing they were OE.

GSP New Axles
 

I ordered a set of new GSP axles from Advance Auto Parts. $88 ea and no core charges. I am just waiting for some free time to put them in. There is a member who put them in. Have not heard any complaints so far.

On a major part like this, I like the idea of getting it over the counter from from a parts store especially if I have to deal with warranty issues later.

In a previous life (before my benz) I was a VW fanatic and for my job I drove these cars (2) many miles and got reimbursed from work. Sometimes the remanned axles were great and sometimes I only got 30,000 miles out of them. I got tired of changing axles and the short life I usually got. I finally decided to stop using remanned axles and started rebuilding my own using new Lobro cv joints. Needless to say after I had replaced all the cv joints in both cars I never had the problem again. I don't know whether you can buy the individual joints for Benz's but I am sure you can and I am sure they are not that hard to change using your original axle. As always it always takes more time the remove the axle than to rebuild the axle with two new joints although I have never done it on a benz.

I've had rebuilt CVJs in my 300D for about 75-100K miles now with no issues, I would either use those or new ones, I would avoid the McParts axles regardless of warrantee.
