Question Looking To Buy A 92' 300sd-need Pricing

Hi! LOOKING TO BUY A 92' 300SD.

Pricing, I know what the web sites say, but what's it worth? 220K, full records, engine replaced by MB at 100K, White/Tan, new tires, no paint or damage. Head just reworked (1800.00) because wife filled it with gas and it ran hot. Car drives and runs as new. What will it bring?

Knock in steering wheel?

While turning the steering wheel, you feel a knock or bump turning the wheel in one direction. What is causing this?

I believe this engine is from a "known-bad" design. If it is a 3.5-liter, that's the one that bends rods all the time.

Take what you think the value of the car is, and add $5000 or $6000 for a new engine.

For more info, search hear on "rod bender" or "bent rod".

The problem is with 3.5L engines that WERE NOT replaced. If they have been replaced then there shouldn't be any problems.

Actually, I was indicating what I'd be willing to pay for it. I bought a '90 300SE with the same miles a few years ago for $5500 and sold it two years later with 285K on it for $4500. It was beautiful inside and out and had had nearly everything replaced.

I also based my opinion on how expensive these cars are to maintain. Has the evaporator been replaced, how about the tranny? Those are big dollar repairs and at those miles will need to be done at some point.

I'd love to own one of these beauties, but I couldn't afford to maintain it. It'd also be difficult to re-sell. I know from first hand experience that 9 of 10 potential buyers won't touch a car with that many miles on it with a ten foot pole, regardless of how good it looks and drives.

All that being said, if you really like no, love this car; have it checked out completely by a compitent MB shop. If it checks out, buy it. If it's had the everything replaced like mine did, you could be good to go for another 100K. In that case, I might pay $8-9K.

Help me out here, today is the day!

Spock & Mr. Bill:

I thank both of you for your replies. Let me add acouple of things:

1) Engine was replaced by MB at 100K. So this engine is the updated version and has 122K.

2) Transmission was rebuilt 30K miles ago by the same tech that has maintained this car for the last 60K.

3) The evaporator was replaced two years ago.

4) When the head was removed, all pistons were checked for the proper deck height to be sure no rods were bent.

5) This car is white/tan with NO paint work. Straight sides and runs like a top.

6) Mr. Bill, I really don't think a compairision can be made to a '90 300SE as we are talking two different body cars. There is little demand for this car, however, there is great demand for 300SD's with this body. Would you not agree?

7) Currant owner says he changes the oil every 4-5K and it is still full at the time the iol change.

8) Last the only reason for selling is the owner is going through a divorse.

8) Is this a more expensive car to maintain than the same year 500SEL? Sould I be looking for one of these instead? My thinking about the 300SD is how few and rare this car is and also the 25-30 MPG?

This time close! Please tell me anything else I might need to know. I personally know the owner and mechanic, and there has been very little problems with this car other than what I have told you here.

Let me add again that the soon to be "X" filled this car up with gas and on a trip to try and mess things up. She also while this car has been in the shop, has taken his 98' 740il and keyed every panel on it. She said of course that it was parked and someone else did it. He knows!

Thanks again!

The replacement engine makes a BIG difference. It is essential to know whether the engine is an updated one. If it in fact was replaced by MB then it will be, and this is a very desireable car. As you probably know, the W140s also tended to have problems with the evaporator going bad, and several people have gone through more than one (call it $2000) so although its very good its been replaced, that doesn't necessarily mean you're out of the woods. The little vacuum door sealers are prone to go out as well. They aren't particularly DIY friendly cars(in fact the opposite is true). Remember with a 92 you're walking in on the first year of the model/chassis, and therefore have a good chance of experiencing some of these traditional problems. Having said that, I don't know anyone who drove one who didn't absolutely love the car. If I were willing to put up with the maintenance and had the money to pay someone else to do the work that's inevitable, I'd go as high as 12,000 on a very clean car w/ the new engine. Make very sure you've looked at the w140 threads so you know what you're letting yourself in for. With the W140 it isn't the membership fee that gets you, its the renewal charge

I can buy the car for $10,000. What do you think?

I think this is a wonderful car to drive, an expensive car to maintain, and an extremely expensive car to repair. This car seems to have had the big ticket items done, but from this forum it seems that others who have this car incur big repair bills. Have a thorough prepurchase inspection done by someone who knows both w140's and the OM603. Make sure he pays extra attention the the AC, suspension, and of course, the engine. IF it all checks out, and you know you can pay the repair bills, go for it. Don't be in a rush, no matter what the owner says. Good Luck.

Ditto to what tjohn said. If you have the hots to own one of these cars, lay down your $10K and get on with it. Be prepared to shell out $2000 a year in maintainance and repairs.

As to your question #6, no I don't agree. The 140 is a newer more luxuriuos car, but most in the know would agree, the 126 is one of the best cars ever made by anyone. They are easy to work on a parts are comparitively cheap. IMO, they are better looking too. For shear luxury it's the 140 hands down. For cost of ownership, the 126, 124,123 are superior. You need to decide what's important to you.

I can tell when someone has the itch...you need to just scratch it and go on. With all that's been done to the car, $10K seems reasonable.

Best to you
