Smile cheap radiator fix

The top tank on our 300D broke and we were looking at a 3 to 400 dollar fix when doing some internet search we found the outfit that orders from the factory that makes the radiator. They sold us just the top tank for 25.00 + shipping. I had it shipped overnight. Make sire you ask for the gasket. The phone # is 1-800-328-8900.

cheap radiator fix

Not that I could find but I got the number from Modine, that makes the radiator, when I was trying to buy just the top part. I called them and they asked me for the model and she found it right away for me yesterday and I recieved it today and hubby got it on. You have to uncrimp the old one and making sure you clean out the area for the gasket and crimp it back on. Just like new. Our radiator was good just the top plastic broke.

Isn't that pityful, a plastic radiator tank. Ever hear of a brass one that broke? MB should be ashamed to pull such a cheap stunt.

I would expect same from GM or Ford but MB? Its just pityful.

Actually, I remember repairing several brass radiators many years ago. The key word here is repair. We would silver solder necks back in or make crimp and solder repairs at the connection of tank and fins. Merely an inconvenience and usually taking only a small amount of time. I should also add that these radiators were old and had given many years of service at the time of failure.

No resoldering a plastic tank!

cheap radiator fix

I agree with both of you in the plastic part (that to me is an important piece) and the repair of the old ones. It was so brittle where the hose connects on that it just crumbled the rest of the way off.

Way to go!! I love these inexpensive, effective fixes. Keep us posted on how well it holds up. By the way, plastic can be welded, I have a plastic welder designed just for repairing radiator tanks.

I've seen plastic welders advertised and had wondered how well they worked. Do the welds hold up well?

But when Plastic gets old and the plasticizers evaporate out of it, you can't weld it, its too brittle. The plastic has changed chemical composition. This never happens to brass.

cheap radiator fix

Should hold up well Kerry, its just like it was before with the top plastic, shows no sign of leaks or dampness around it. Taking it out of the car and clamping it seems to work best that way you can get a good grip on the metal holders

cheap radiator fix

Not hard at all JCD. Take out the radiator, easier this way and with screwdriver carefully lift up the metal tabs that holds the top on. Then take out the old gasket and cleaned out the furrow good and put in the new gasket and put the top tank on and carefully crimp the metal tabs with pliers back on tight, but be careful you are working with metal against plastic. Then reinstall radiator.
