Engine temp and radiator
Hello, I am new to this forum and have a few of questions...
I think my first one was answered by the post a few threads down but here it goes just to confirm. I have an 82 300GD G-wagen with an OM617A turbodiesel from an early 80s 300TD swapped in place of the original normally aspirated diesel that came standard. What my question is is while travelling down the highway at 120kms with the engine roaring at 4500rpm the engine temp reaches 100C and stayes there. The oil (15w40) reaches about 120-125C and holds there regaedless of how far I go or how long it takes. Is this normal and OK? The second question is what is the dimensions of the radiator and oil cooler for the turbodiesel 300TD/300D (w123) from the early 80s? I want to know if mine were swapped with the engine or if it was (yet) another thing that was missed (forgotten??) when the swap was done? The third question is would putting a larger capicity, probably electric, engine fan on help to cool it any while driving at this speed or is the amount of air flowing through pretty much maxed out? Lastly, what is the diameter of the exhaust on these models? I know this was missed on the engine swap by the previous owner and I want to make it right this week. I hope someone can help. I dont know about yours.. but on my oil cooler on the side of it was stamped the MB part number. (it did not match the era of my engine) Granted I had my cooler out so mine was easy to read. It might be on yours as well.
Did the non turbo's have an oil cooler? If they didn't then odds are more in your favor that the engines original oil cooler and bracketry was transplanted into your car. Only other thing I can think of since my rig is a bastard (non original) if there is an oil cooler on the car that is functioning.... odds are your fine. It was suggested in here to me that a few of the vehicles with this turbo engine did not have oil coolers anyway. Do you have AC? now that may be a reason to add a aux. fan since it appears that the original MB turbo's with AC had aux. fans.

I am much less concerned about the oil cooler than I am about the engine temp rising so high. Sence we both have bastard vehicles (swapped in engines) I am wondering some things about your swap:
1. What is your rpm at highway speed? Mine reaches about 4500rpm, this is when it starts to run hot. 2. Do you have the original rad from the Mog or the one from the sedan your engine came from (or another one altogether)? What is the size of it (LxWxD)? My other thought is it may be something else like the water pump, etc. Thanks for your help, Steve |
