124 300D 2.5 Serp. belt replacement

Guys,

I am getting ready to replace my serpentine belt soon. Just 50K ago I had the dealership do the belt, fan, tensioner and clutch. But, the belt has horizontal cracks and squeaks when cold - so I guess it is time to do it again.

Well, I have not yet done this job so I am looking for some advice. Do I need to remove the fan and clutch? If so how? Does the radiator need to come out too? Any belt manufactures you would recomend?

Thanks for the thoughts.

Slowmoe,

I removed the fan and shroud assemblies, and ultimately the radiator when replacing the tensioner and belt. For just the belt I think at least the fan assemblies. I'm sure someone has done it without that, but it was a much more pleasant job with the room and allowed for visual inspection and cleaning of areas that aren't usually easy to see.

Removing the fan is not fun without the tools, I haven't tried it. Dealer has a shallow 8mm allen socket 3/8" drive for this purpose. They also sell a spinner tool and a pulley holder. If you dont' have access to the tools I'd tried it with the fan in place.

To release tension on the belt there is a black plastic piece where the belt tensioner spring hooks onto (right near where the shock mounts). A long bolt with a 13 mm nut goes thru the bolt. Stick a long 3/8" extension into thte top of the black piece to release tension and remove the bolt. Then pull the belt up and it'll release the tensioner. Put the new belt on and then put the bolt back into that black plastic piece.

Tools

HI i am going to replace the Fan Belt, and was looking of the site and took a look at the my car ('88 260e) it looks like the shallow 8mm allen socket 3/8" drive tools to remove the fan is a must, due to no room for the removal of the Fan Belt, so were can i order this tool, and what is the price?

Thank You, Aaron
