Dino or Synthetic???
Hello all!
Going to be getting my 83 300SD shortly. Car has 280K miles, getting the car from the original owner, a family friend. right now, she runs like a dream. Strong turbo, smooth idle, just some light smoke under full throttle. My question, though, and not to start a heated oil debate, is this: the car currently does not leak anything. Tight as a drum. Should I, on my first change, go to a synthethic, or stay with the dino the has had its entire life??? I currently have a New Bettle TDI, and run Mobil DELVAC-1 exclusively in it. It would be nice to keep one diesel oil in the garage. Thanks! Chris |

cris74,
I'd go with the Delvac-1. Where do you purchase your Delvac-1? I've never seen it for sale anyplace except mail order so I use Mobil-1. P E H |

Personally I would keep running what it's used to as long as it's a good name brand Diesel oil. I'm sure others have their own opinions. Try the search feature also...... there must be 1,000's of posts on this topic.

I did try the search, but most of the messages turned into oil was, without answering a question. My only cocern would be whetheror not I can expect the car to leak for a bit afte the change to synthetic. Thanks |

Definitely use synthetic. Delvac-1 is great, I use it in my newer cars. I use Mobil-1 15W-50 in my older car (it's cheaper). Amsoil and RedLine also make great oils but cost more and offer little advantage, IMO.

I'm using Shell Rimula, which is a big rig fleet oil. I've used it for the past 10K+ miles and have already noticed improvements. The engine sounds more rhythmic, idles softer, and it just plain 'feels' better now. I figure, why not get what they use to keep those big rigs runnin'. This oil has been great year-round. 15W-30.
If I were to get a new E-320 CDI , or a fairly new diesel, I would run synthetic in it, though.

Good experience with transition from DINO to Delvac 1
Had a '99 VW TDI and sold it recently with 100K. Ran 5w-40 Delvac-1 during the last 3 of 4 years. The timing of the VW's sale was coincident with the finding of an '82 300D that had ~112 K on it, garage kept, all services. Took a chance (I was cautioned that making this change would cause it to leak) changed it over to 5W-40 Delvac-1 synthetic. 2 oil changes later, the garage floor remains dry and the oil level remained between the marks at 5K with now additions made.
Mobil has an 800 number that will put you in touch with one of their reps. to explain their product and concerns you may have. I did, in light of the vehicles age (seals, gaskets, etc.) and made my own judgement based on what condition I found the engine to be in. He also explained the difference between MOBIL 1 - which is specific for gasoline powered engines and Delvac-1 which will work well in a gasoline engine but was engineered to work in a diesel engine and handle soot and other unique by products of combustion. Just my $0.02 worth
