manual shifter update/status since last post
i am the village idiot that has the unfortunate experience of losing the reverse gear lockout feature on his 83 240d. previously i had changed the two or is it three shifter bushings closest to the shifter - the smaller diameter bushings. shifting has since the replacement been getting sloppyer. yesterday i replaced two of the three 'front' shifter bushings. did not have the patience to complete the job. the bushing closest to the transmission tunnel is a bear. then decided to look at shifter itself. removed the shifter stalk and peered inside. there is a sliding pin with an opening into which the shifter rod end engages when the shifter is in steady state. when one lifts up on the shifter the shifter rod end disengages the pin and one can move to the reverse detent. or at least i think that is the way it works. my problem is that i can move to the reverse detent without pulling up on the shifter. anyone familair with this mechanism? any thoughts on repair? thank you.

I can say you are right about not needing to lift the shifter- same thing on my 1980 240D, so I always shift into second before going for first. And never loan your car to the village idiot.

Which I guess I should add that you are not the village idiot if you haven't blown up your tranny yet by shifting into reverse from third. Or roared away from a stoplight in reverse (oops!).

Have you compared your shifter to the drawings which I posted on the first thread? Do you have all the springs and pins shown in that drawing ? Is anything in there BENT ?
