I have 1992 300D. 602 engine.
I have several questions.

How much oil makes min to max?

What is good temperature for oil level check?
How do you make appropriate temperateure for engine oil level check in winter?

Is there a chart for temperature vs fluid level?

The manual states that tranny fluid level is 0.5 in (12mm) below min at 68-86 degreed F (20-30 degrees C).

It would be useful if I knew the level in winter temperature too.

Jim B+, these 220/240D engines like to leak out the rear crank because of a crappy seal that mounts from the inside. The easy fix is to only fill to "halfway between the marks". Keeping it there is your call. daBenz won't burn down to the fill mark before it's time to change the oil (3k). I think JimSmith is the one who parks downhill to keep the seal from dripping. He had some interesting opinions on that seal, too.

I add oil when the low oil light comes on. The owner's manual says that the light starts coming on when the oil level reaches the "min" mark on the dipstick.

On the 603, the difference between min and max is 2.1 quarts (according to the owner's manual).

I know you're not asking about my particular engine, but I thought I'd share anyway.

Level from min to max should be in the owner's manual, but I believe it's 2.0 quarts. Best way to check, IMO, is when cold and has sat overnight. Remove, wipe, insert slowly, wait 3-5 seconds, remove & read. Repeat 2-3 times. Checking in winter is the same. No chart for temp vs fluid level on the engine oil, AFAIK, only the transmission.

The manual confuses me.

It reads "The best time to check the engine oil level is when the oil is warm, such as during a fuel stop."

So how warm is warm?

In the CD it reads "Check oil level approx. w minutes after stopping engine at operating temperature."

What does "w minutes" mean? "w" is not a number.

If I change the oil at 3k miles like a good boy, mine generaly does not need toping up.

For the buzzer/gauge/ight deal, what you really need is a vacuum/electircal switch to shut the darn thing off in the event of catostrophic oil pressure loss. It'd be pretty simple to rig, I need to do this with the 300D as a safety measure with the remote starter.

I just throw in a quart of oil stretcher when I'm a quart low.

Mine are usually in the 4-6kmi per quart range, sometimes better (~8k/qt). I usually change the oil before it ever reaches the "MIN" mark, and I change at 10kmi with Delvac-1...

How in the world did this pseudo oil thread get through here while I was gone ? Wasn't it Larry that said "add it hot and add it often or was it 240Joe? I can't seem to remember.
