Maintenance/Repair Manuals-Which is Best?
Hey All,
Pardon this newbie as I have only owned my '84 300SD for two weeks now. But what I lack for in experience I certainly more than make up for with enthusiam as I spend most waking moments wanting to be behind the wheel of my "Hildegard". I do want to get cracking on getting a good maintenance/repair manual. Definitely I want something that shows the full schematic of the car and what to unscrew to get to yada yada yada. I am no ASE mechanic, but I can do some things and have a strong desire to learn more. That being said, what is the best way to go in terms of buying a repair manual? Thanks. |

you can get a Haynes Manual at your local Pep Boys or Autozone.
Also, you can get the Factory service manuals on CD MB Tech Manuals from MBUSA cost $19.99 plus S&H MB Tech Manuals from MBUSA to get the actual paper ones you have to call MBUSA directly.

The only Haynes manual that will be somewhat helpful is the one for the 300D. Or is there a Haynes manual for the 300SD?

it's only for the w123.
Sorry I didn't notice that it was an SD you were looking for. I'd imagine that the Haynes manual might help a little in regard to the Engine and such.

Haynes W123 Manual - Use With Caution
The Haynes book for the diesel 123 is barely adequate. I would recommend it only as a parts location reference document.
— no procedure documented for checking timing chain stretch — the photos for the valve clearance adjustment imply that every day open end wrenches are adequate for this job (you might be able to do the front 4 cylinders but that last one is darned hard even with the gin-yooo-wine Hazet wrenches) — many graphics captions are ambiguously positioned so that it is difficult to determine which graphic goes with what caption — photos illustrating the drip timing procedure are mirror imaged OTOH, the chapter on chassis electrical is reasonbly OK for understanding how to dissasemble the car's interior components. my .02 R Leo

Well said, the haynes manual is barely adequate. Though
I have an SD many things apply to both models and they are simply not covered. I was able to adjust the valves with two 14mm open end wrenches though, I guess when everything seems difficult the real difficulties don't stand out? Mark T. 82'300Sd |

BJ,
What's in the hardcopy manuals that's no in the CD? Besides a proper index. Thanks, Sixto 95 S420 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD |

The Haynes manuals (for most cars) are a little better than nothing....
The factory service manuals, even though they assume the reader has received some MB training are far superior. I was lucky and bought the full set long before they went to CDs. As a matter of course, I buy factory manuals for every vehicle I own. Some get used a little more than others, but most of my questions can be answered somewhere in them. The hardest to find was the manual for the 280SL. Wes |

I've got the paper manuals for the 108 car and the official MB CD-ROM for the 201 car.
I certanly admit that the pics in the paper manuals (purchased on ebay) are better, but the official MB CD-ROM is really good and absolutely complete. If I were wanting to maintain any of these cars myself, I'd get the CD. MB Tech Manuals from MBUSA cost $19.99 plus S&H MB Tech Manuals from MBUSA Sholin
