Unhappy Water Leak in driver footwell

Pulled up driver floor mat, worn through by heel at gas pedal.

Floorboard looks a little eroded/rusted. Water seems to collect there and I cannot figure out what to do

It does not look rusted clear through so I do not think it is coming up from road surface. Any ideas?

try search

There are lots of threads on leaks in the footwells.

Start with cleaning the hood hinge drains, then make sure that the windshield seal is good, then the AC drain, then maybe sunroof drains.

It will take time....

The drains and other things that can cause leaks are very different from model to model. It would be most helpful to know what year and model MB you're working on.

Good luck,

start with

Clean all the debris out of the pockets under the hinges for the hood. It drains (I think) into the wheel well, make sure the whole path is clear. Let us know how it works.

Thanks. I cleaned out under the hood and there was some gunk but did not seem that much.

Also took a long look at the front window seal and it looks dry with some cracking and even a chunk that is splitting off.

Am going to have the windshield replaced (small craks also ) and ghet the seal done at the same time.

New wrinkle. We have had a ton of rain and I just went out to check the car as it has been standing still for a couple of hours. Depression at foot of gas puiddle has a cupful of water yet I could not see where it would have dripped in.

Checked rear footwell and it the carpet was wet I am now wondering if it is not coming into the rear well and rolling forward.

These leaks are driving me crazy!

leaky

You may well have a leak in the scuttle panel under the windscreen - it goes bad around the vents, so take the vent panels off and have a look - plug it with fibregalss for now, but you will also get electrical problems after a while as it will get on some electrical connections under the dash

Thanks all. Now that the rain has stopped, I spent some time checking for water and rust. Water is leaking into the driver footwell and also the right rear footwell. The trunk also had pretty wet carpet on both the right and left sides.

Cleaned out under the hood hinges and also the plastic well under the windshield. Lot of junk under the hinges and had to use a vacuum attachment to get it all out.

The front windsheild seal is very dry and brittle. I assume that I will replace it.

The trunk seal is also old and when I squeeze it, water comes out. Will; have to be replaced. Also when I look under the trunk lid at the base of the rear windshield and trunk there is rust. The seal did not look bad but maybe it should be replaced also?

Is this doable for a very new 300SD owner and very non-mechanical?

probably the wrong car for a non-mechanical

Well I guess that you will probably have to become somewhat mechanical, since an old MB requires it (or else a ton of money).

Like anything else in life, if you can convince yourself that you like doing a given task (like working on this car), time spent on it will not be wasted. But if you can't stand tinkering and problem solving on the fly, getting your hands dirty, well... it is going to be a long road...

Like I tell my old (fundamentalist christian, 2002 oldsmobuick that cost 3.5 times what my MB cost driving) boss who could never figure out who drove that immaculate limo (my SDL) in the company parking lot- the mechanics will inherit the earth.

You are absolutley correct about getting your hands dirty. one of the reasons I bought the car was to learn how to do a lot more.

Also with a 100 mile round trip commute each day, I love a big heavy car on the highway Prior to this I was driving an '88 mint towncar and going through three tanks of gas a week @ 15 mpg. I cannot tell you how much nicer the highway cruising is when you know it is at 29 mpg.

Thanks for all the help.

Ther's a lot of information here about W123 water leaks, but I don't recall reading any about W126 leaks. Anyway, you said in an earlier post that you plan to have the windshield replaced. Do that and make sure they use a new seal. It sounds like you need to have the rear windshield seal done as well. What is disconcerting there is the rust. If there is rust in the channel where the seal goes, the glass shop almost certainly won't fix it. So that you may need to do yourself or maybe consult a body shop. The instructions for rear seal replacement (on a 123) have been posted here more than once. The water in the trunk is probably coming from the rear windshield and not the trunk seal. But if it looks bad and you want to do it, that should be pretty easy.

Oh, and buy your seals from Fastlane using the button at the top of the page because sales there support this site. Somebody here went through that recently and the installer said the seals were better than what his shop uses.

I found a pond of water in the right passenger and rear passenger floor on my W124 300D. It turned out to be the water from the A/C evaporator. The hose that drains the water outside fell apart completely. I had to replace both hoses (driver and passenger side).
