what is best source for pricing

there's an '83 300sd close to home here. has about 300k miles, 80k on rebuilt engine, 5k on new transmission. i haven't actually gone to look at it, we hit a snag on price right off the bat. asking price is $6000, i looked on the bluebook link through yahoo and it told me i should expect to pay $2750. $3750 from a dealer. he claims the value when he paid license tabs was $8500, and carfax told him it was worth $5000. carfax who didn't list the guy he bought it from last year as one of the owners, heh. go carfax~

in any case, AC doesn't work and vacuum system doesn't work, at least to the point that the doors must be locked manually. so it has some good, some bad.

are there other at least semi-reliable places to find expected prices?

thanks,

--Nick

You are dealing with an idiot. $6K should get you a PERFECT or damned near car of this vintage with @100-150K on it. Ebay is a good place to keep an eye on to see what MB's are going for but it is not always the best indicator. Kelly Blue Book and NADA will get you closest and then start deducting for all the things that don't work. Even if the car is really nice it still isn't worth more than $3K and thats pushing it. The seller is a substance abuser. RT

I agree with rwthomas1, The seller is a substance abuser. So it has a relatively new engine and trans.... The rest of the car has 300,000mi on it! These older Mercedes, while fine cars, do wear out. The climate control, A/C, front ends and steering, even the interior starts to get tired at that mileage. Unless EVERYTHING else was A #1, He is asking too much. MY $0.02

Here's a similar thread on that very subject we had awhile ago:
New SD buyer- price question
I paid "too much" for my SD($6000), and don't regret it one bit. It's been a real jewel to me. But I'll let ya read thru the thread and decide for yourself.

SD pricing

Rather than SD he should have said SM, because you're about to get it. A friend just bought an SD with a weak tranny, shot front suspension with 280,000 miles but it has a very stong motor and very good interior. He paid $300. The tranny fix and front end came in at $1200 with the repairs he loves the car.

Look at and drive everyone that comes up in your area for sale. The fella asking $6k is a nut. You could always offer him $2500 and see what happens. Walk away if he does not want to talk after the offer.
You will like an early 80's SD better than a Honda. I would recommend though that you purchase it with the plans of learning how to do all your own work/repairs.
good luck

Hey I have no problem admiting that I paid $5765.00 for my car. I didn't mind paying this as, IMHO is a 9 on a scale of 1-10, runs great, shifts great and is ABSOLUTELY rust-free. Even so it has had its share of problems related mainly to the deterioration of 20yr old parts. My theory is buy the most sound, complete car you can afford and then work towards perfection! Not that you can't start with a 300K car and do this, you certainly can and many do but they sure don't pay $6K to start with! Look around, there are many deals to be had. RT
