Start of delivery -- the drip method
The next upgrade on my 240D is the timing chain. In my usual
obsessive-compulsive way I am trying to understand all the parameters before I do it as I really don't like surprises in the middle of a job. What I am trying to get my brain around at the moment is timing the injection pump. Reviewing the manual on start of delivery adjustment, I see the "drip method" described. As usual, the description leaves much to be desired. The description says to pump up the fuel pressure with the hand pump and wait until it starts dripping about once per second--which is considered correct. I have some question to those here who may have done this before: 1. What does the flow look like when the pump is to far advanced? 2. What does the flow look like when the pump is retarded. 3. Any recommendations on doing this for the first time? I have seen these piezo-electric devices that allows adapting a standard inductive timing light to a diesel motor. Does anyone have experience with these? Do they work? Thanks in advance M. 77 240D |

1. It drips too fast
2. It does not drip 3. use the most accurate method of setting the crank position, have mechinical advantage available to you ( crow bar, blocks of wood ). 4. Turn the engine by hand two revolutions and recheck after you have tightened everything. 5. Find TCane's description of this procedure. 6. This is a chicken and egg deal to me. If you don't set the indicator in the proper place in the first place then you won't get a good reading anyway... and since you can't judge the fuel delivery except at static conditions... I don't understand how they would help. I am still looking for the spark plug wire to put my inductive clamp on ....... |

I think there is only one thing to add,
You need to pump the primer pump through the adjustment. Not clearly called out in the proceedure, but I believe Ritter told me that a few years ago. I don't think the piezo electric things work that well with benz's. Later cars have a place for using a electronic measuring tool. It's a dream on post 82 cars. THen again, once you set on up- it's good for years. Michael
