Auto to Manual Conversion
 

Hi all,

I have a 1986 190D 2.5 and i was wondering what can i do if i wanted to convert this car from automatic to manual
Im just sick of playing with these stupid automatic transmissions
(Blown trannies twice in 4 yrs)
I feel that the engine has tremendous power as i modified it but the shifting patterns and the sluggisshness of these automatics kills it all

I wonder what would be the price of a 2nd hand manual tranny and ive heard the clutch is hydraulically controlled so i have to change my master cylinder???

does anyone have a manual 190D here???
Are trannies from the 190D 2.2 and 2.5 the same

Pick and pull near me sells all transmissions $67. The whole shebang for a conversion would run about $120 including pedals, shifter, driveshaft, flywheel clutch etc.
On the earlier models (don't know about yours) the clutch master cylinder is attached to the pedal mechanism and joined to the brake master fluid reservoir with a hose. If your brake master fluid reservoir has a little nipple sticking out which you could cut open to attach a hose, I'll be yours functions the same way.

Dang thats not expensive
but i live in canada and these models are much more rare
so im expecting an used man tranny to cost in the arounds of 500$ CAD

Do u say my driveshaft is not going to be the same length as the manual one??

Does any of u have a 190 D 2.2 or 2.5 manual and if u can post some pictures of the throttle linkages in the engine compartment and the interior i will be greatful

Great idea. Before trying it I would ask a ton of questions. You may find a) it bolts right up, or b) it takes so much skill that if you can do it at all you can pretty much do what you want.
200Ds and 250Ds, 124-series cars that were never sold in the States, had manual 5-spd trannys. Maybe a spacer plate could be made to accomodate differences between the front of the tranny and the back of the engine.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who would be very interested in what you find.

Well i found 2 transmissions from 1986 190E 2.3 manual which fit my 190D 2.5 diesel apparently
It is guaranteed to fit by the scrap yard
although i do not know if the driveshaft lenght will be the same and if the speedometer will work in the same way
But gear ratios seem to be the same because my differential ratio is faster than a gasoline car diff.
So im thinking that would accomodate the slower rpms of a diesel engine compared to a gasoline one

I will evaluate some more and probably will launch myself into this crazy project
