GOOD-->news<--BAD (leaking IP, 617 952)

ok..... GOOD news.. I have reworked the throttle linkage on the beasty Unimog and now have about about 1/4" between the linkage end and the throttle stop on the back of the IP. Considering I use to have about 3/4 to 1 inch thats good. My Boost Gauge seems to indicate I've done something cause now bounces around at about 0.6 at top throttle where it use to bounce around 0.55

BAD news... as I drove it with the dog house off I discovered the furthest forward injector line on the top of the IP is still leaking. I thought I had fixed this with a little extra ugg on the top 17mm nut with a wrench a month or so ago. Welll..... it still seeping out there at speed. Originally my wrench would not tighten it further cause of the dog house was in the way. Same with the 15mm below it. I bought a crows foot wrench and was able to tighten the 17mm more... it still seeps though not as much... It is seeping below the 15mm though. I still cant tighten that one anymore cause of dog house, but boy it sure seems tight anyway. Then again the top one did too when I first tightened it.
I'll try to buy a socket 15mm crows foot to see if I can get to the lower one that way.
Do I have to pull the IP to fix this? You wont BELIEVE how hard that is going to be... I possibly will have to remove my whole truck cab to get the IP off this MB engine.

I have recently discovered a new method for removing this engine which takes some body alterations but I can't yet afford that either... I'm unemployed

agggggg.... Please give me good news.

oh..... and how does this affect performance? or does it? I'm just wondering if thats why I seem to have less performance than others that have done this same conversion into their Unimog.

A leak at the base is probably the o-ring that seals the fuel chamber. Replace them all, and replace the copper seal in there at the same time. The seal is, I think, UNDERNEATH the pressure valve seat on that pump. The pressure valve is the tiny dodad inside the thing that come off, with a spring on top. Make SURE the spring is on top, and the pressure valve is in right way up, or you won't get any fuel injected on that cylinder!

A socket will fit over the pressure valve holder after you remove the lines.

Also, check the linkage to make sure the rod that goes over the engine is adjusted correctly. On my brother's 300D, we discovered that there is a slip joint in it, and that we had set it wrong, so that he only had about 1/3 total throttle. Preformance increased considerably when I fixed the length corretly. Still not full, since the bushings on the firewall are missing, allowing the linkage to go sideways rather than rotate.

YESSSSSSs.... I'll look into the O rings. Should I just call a IP shop or MB to get these?

As to linkage.... Conceptually what your saying is what I did all day. I swapped some rods of a junker, bent and tweaked and shortened, lenghend and slightly rearranged what was there till I had more range of motion on the back of the IP.

Overall this linkage it seems, the arms and ball sockets and levers were used off an MB car, along with some home made stuff which looks to me to be made of things off a Unimog. It is installed in a totaly different way than a car. Also. there is no smog stuff, no nothing being opperated off the linkage but the workings on the back of the IP.

I replaced the copper sealing ring when the #1 ,what ever its called, 15 mm delivery valve housing, was leaking at the base. actually I did them all. A cheap and easy fix. Get a couple extra as I had to re do one of them. There was some crud in there causing it not to seal which I did not see the first time.

They are available at any MB parts store, here on FastLane, or at a dealer. Pretty cheap, the entire set for my 87 300D was $8 and some change.

Yeahhhh... right on...

TANKS.

I would prefer to order from here in return for the good tech, but this time Im in a hurry and MB is only 30 or so minutes away.

Question??? would this leak effect my performance. Still trying to decipher all why I seem to have less power than the others that have done this conversion. Also see my EGR thread.

THANKS folk!!!!

Just called the Ford/MB dealer.....

so who's wrong..... Dealer say there is nothing on top of the 84 era 5cyl turbo D IP to prevent leaking fuel but the compression fittings on the tubes to the injectors.

No brass bushings, no O rings.....

grrrrrrrrrr......

anyone got part numbers
