please help today red alert prime
 

i have an 83 300d. i am changing primary and secondary fuel filters. does the line self prime or do i have to prime it afterwards??:eek: :eek:

You need to prime it, the primer pump is on the side of the injection pump. If it is the old style (white platic top?) you have to unscrew it before you pump it, the new style (black cap)you just pump. There should be a lot of info if you use the search.

You will need to prime the system using the hand pump located on the fuel pump. I always put a rag under the hand pump to catch the fuel that always leaks out of the pump. Also, leave the spin on filter slightly loose so that you can see the fuel come up to the rim. Once you see fuel at the rim tighten it and start the car. it may stall once or twice until the fuel is flowing.

I fill my spin on filter (ATF works, or something like diesel purge or another fuel additive would do well too). This way there is no need to prime the filter, youre good to go.

agree - if you fill the new spin on filter before you install it with diesel or an additive etc.. give it a couple of pumps or not and then start 'er up.
it may take longer than usual to start but then all should be ok.

I know this practice saves priming time, but in the Ford shop manual for my 1986 F250 diesel Pick Up ( International), it is specifically prohibited. I think the fear is that some unfiltered fuel may carry debris to the pump and that would be bad. This is one of the reasons I added a 12 volt electric fuel pump pushing the fuel to the filter on my pick up--it makes for very easy priming.

Here's a picture. You may like to fill the replacement main filter with Crisco vegetable oil, or the like. It works fine and does not stink up your hands like diesel.
