Vacuum part under back seat

What is the vacuum part under the back seat in a 1987 300d. Is it the vacuum supply pump (very expensive) or is it the vacuum amplifier (much less costly).

While searching for the reason why my door locks don't work (they never did) I looked under the back seat and the bpart was missing!!!

I went to the local u-pick there were no 124 cars to compare so I'm not sure what the part looks like.

Any help appreciated.

Joe.

Joe,

I have not lifted the seat on my 300E, so I cannot say for sure, but on my 190E 2.3-16 the vacuum pump is an electrically powered unit, sits in a block of grey foam rubber, and has vacuum lines and power lines coming to it. It is on the passenger side of the car.

If this is missing you have a good explanation for why the system does not work. Check Fastlane as well as recycling places. Or E-Bay. Good luck, Jim

I replaced this part myself a few months ago when my locks stopped working. I believe it was less than $100 used. It is for the door locks. Make sure there are no other leaks in the doors when you replace it or you will very quickly burn out the new pump.

THANKS FOR THE RESPONSES !!!

I figured that it was the pump but wasn't sure. I went to a local recycler and he would have sold me one from a 1981 SD for $25.00 but Mercedes said that it wasn't compatable. The yard had a couple of 280CE's a couple of 300D's (earlier models) and a couple of S class cars. I'll have to keep Looking.

I assume that this system is separate from the engine vacuum system and that a leak here won't affect the transmission shifting etc.?

Thanks again,

Joe

That's correct--it won't affect tranny.

You need to get the pump from a 201 or 124 model (190 or 300E/D) since the earlier models mostly depended on the engine vacuum pump to supply the vacuum.
