1st gear manny tranny and a Diesel
Howdy,
I don't know if this is really "technical", but I just wondered if anyone else has noticed this: I can put the transmission in 1st gear and let out the clutch without my foot on the gas and my car will not stall and happily move at a slow pace. Every other (gas) manual car I've ever driven would definitely stall without giving it some gas. Is this your experience, or is it just a consequence of the REALLY LOW gearing of the 190D 2.2. Sholin

You're learning why diesels are the engine of choice for tractors, trucks, trains, ships, etc. It's torque and governor, not just fuel price.

I can do it with my 240D. But I can also do it with my gas F250.

It's a diesel thing more than anything else. You could probably do that in my dad's '67 F-250 if you released the clutch slowly enough, but I can drop the clutch in my truck and it'll go, without even touching the throttle...

On my 190D 2.2, you can slam the clutch without any finnesse at all and it won't stall the engine. It's amazing, my other experience with manual cars was when I was in Guam on business. They had a Nissan Sentra manual gas 4cyl. That clutch was so slick and the engine so sick that every takeoff from a standing start I'd have to rev up the engine and really heat the clutch up. I could smell burnt clutch everywhere I went.
