Having had a 123 before the 126 - the size is quite incredible -mostly in the rear of the cabin. You could cross your legs in the back seat. Love the car

You have a SDL the "L" means you have 5 inches of legroom in the rear seats that the SD does not have.

To answer your question the SD is a larger car. The 123 was the bottom or entry level car in those years. The SD was the high level or "S" class. The SD or SDL is a wonderful car. Roomy and luxurious compared to the 123. I have a 82 300TD and a 300SDL.
I am rebuilding the 300TD. The 300SDL will go this Fall. Its to far gone to rebuild. Low compression in #1 cylinder and in need of a rebuilt tranny. I am going to miss that car. The SD or SDL is a truly wonderful car to drive.
