300 Turbo Diesel engine into 240D (manual tranny)

The 240D (1982) which I picked up for $100 ended up having a bad engine so I have an idea of swaping a 300 Turbo Diesel in to this car. How difficult and timely is the transplant? Does anyone have or know of a used 240D engine? I was thinking of parting the car but she's way too nice for that since evertything else works perfectly.

Thanks guys, Igor.

I know of someone who was doing a 240D into a 300, and If you use the search feature of this site you may find that I once posted a link to a site showing a 300SD engine into a former 240D car.
So this is a very doable swap, but my recommendation would be that you carefully consider the cost in time and $ before you get too deep. If you are a determined person who can do most of the work yourself...I say "go for it !" If you have to have a shop do it for you, I don't think it would be worth it.

I would have no trouble doing this swap as long as I had the complete donor car sitting near the recipient while the project is being done. Without that, you will wear yourself out looking for tiny little pieces.

Good luck,

Perhaps we should start a LIST of TINY PIECES.....

So that at some point in the future people might be able to take a good list to the site of the donor car ( since sometimes space or other considerations don't allow it to be right on site ) and come home with all the stuff needed to do this swap....

swap

motor mounts will fit, the shocks wont, no place for them on a 240

get the following :

glow plug relay

  • radiator overflow tank (opposite side)

  • radiator (uprated)
oil cooler (should come with engine if you pulled it )
clutch fan for engine vs plastic blades for a 240
the overboost sensor switch near the brake fluid master cyl

you dont need a bowden cable for idle adj. (240 has one )

This is one of the most simple swaps there is, go for it

Get the driveshaft too -- it's shorter for the 300 than for the 240 since the engine sits back further. There is a posting for someone who put a manual tranny on a 300 turbo, would be good to look at that, too.

You may also want the differential -- lower ratio on the 300D, will give you more speed and better milage.
