engine not shutting off.. again...
 

this is getting to be a bit annoying. the shutoff vac lines are getting clogged with oil more frequently. i cleared it yet again today by removing the line at the shutoff valve (brown with blue stripe) and the brown one at the 4 way connector and blowing through the brown line. lots of oil coming out of the brown with blue stripe line which was obviously restricting the vacuum to the shutoff valve.

after clearing the vac line of oil engine shuts down immediately
with the key.

my question is where is the oil coming from and how do i stop it from clogging up the vac lines?

diaphram in the fuel shut off is probably leaking, sucking the oil out of the injection pump, will also cause it to not shut off. or shut off real slow. try checking it with a hand vaccume pump, it should hold its vaccume, if not replace the valve. about a $40 part. good luck

thanks matt - i sorta guessed also this was the deal. i'm kinda scared of replacing this part, in view of the possibility of engine runaway. anyone have any experience of DIY replacement of the shutoff valve?

i replaced one the other nite, they are kinda difficult to get too, just be sure that the hook, hooks the rack before you bolt it up. then make sure the rack is free after you get it bolted in. good luck.

Take off the air hose going to the air cleaner. Then if engine should run away, you can easily stop it by putting something over the air cleaner inlet to cut off the air to the engine.

Its a lot quicker and cleaner than loosening all the flare nuts on the injectors to stop the engine.

I don't think that's going to stop the diesel enginne. These engines are quite resourceful. Bob, just make sure the valve <hooks>. I was scared too, so I had my indy do it. He said even if you cut the fuel lines, that engine would still run for a half hour. Replacing that valve worked for about a week before I had sut-off problems again. I then replace the vacuum shut-off valve at the ignition whici was a bear to replace. Good luck, Bob.
