MB OM616 turbo on a G-Wagen clone.

Payload of 3.75 tons, 91 bhp OM 616 Turbo engine with Hanomag independent front suspension. Tubular chasis with cradle type Puch/Unimog transfer case, 5-speed ZF tranny, rear differential from MB truck. 16" wheels. OM 616 turbo officialy from MB with OM 617 pistons, valves, water pump, oil cooler and crank.
Tank tough corrugated steel body. German Off Road magazine tested it and made it 4x4 of the year. Rated it as extremely durable and practical 4WD with solid payload and indestructible. |

Ugly
It is ugly and strong like a real 4WD should be, no wonder German 4x4 mag gave it a thumbs up over the likes of Land Cruisers and Land Rovers. It weighs 2800lb and is way tougher than the newer G-Wagen from MB as well as the other blobs they pass off as 4WD which includes MB's own crappy M-class.
Looks are not needed doing trails ridden with rocks and stones, strenght is and that the Gurkha, true to its namesake, lives up to with relish.:) |

Can you tell us more about the engine. Is the turbo added to a standard 616 or have the internal components of the engine been modified to accept the turbo (like the 617). For instance, are there oil squirters onto the pistons to cool them down?
How is the water pump different? |

3.75 tons payload? I think this is slightly overstated. Where would you put it all unless its all gold or lead. Imagine how slow this would be with only 90HP pulling 3.75 tons plus the weight of the vehicle.. P E H |

You'd be surprised. I had a non-turbo 616 in my 307d motorhome which was rated for 3500 kilos. It was only really slow on steep hills. But I like the idea of a turbo on a 616. Why didn't MB do it on the 240d? It would have improved power and economy. HOw difficult would it have been to do it once they had added it to the 617? Does anyone know why they did not? |

No overstatement here as the rating is from the factory and German 4x4 mag confirmed it in their tests. The Gurkha uses MB truck diffs. It goes up to 140kmph which is adequate for highway cruising and dont think anyone needs speed off road. The Unimogs have pulled more load with less bhp than the Gurkha and it is due to proper gearing. If you really need speed then get off diesel and check out Ivan Ironman Stewart's Toyota 4Runner truck with over 800bhp, it set quite a few speed records at Baja. |

So Mercedes is still building the 616? I read somewhere that Mercedes sold the tooling for all the older 508 etc style commercial vehicles to an Iranian company--or is it just an Iranian subsidiary of Mercedes? Does Mercedes build the 616 in India or Germany? Is the Gurkha exported to other countries?
