help needed w/mirror plate

The chrome/silver triangular plate which is by the small handle gizmo for adjusting the right side mirror on my '82 240D needs replacing.I have the genuine Mercedes part, however,I can't get the small nib or protrusion on the inside upper part of the triangle to stay in the hole it is supposed to lock into! The worn out part(the original) has like a little cotter pin on the nib. I assume this held it in place,in the hole. There seems to be some adhesive or caulking in the hole where this nib went. Can any help me with this? It seems trivial, but that piece of chrome looks pretty cheesy flopping around as you drive.Anyone had experience with this nuisance? Thanks!!
