1980 240d

I am thinking of buying a 1980 240D, 4 speed with 250,000 miles for $1000 ; what should i look out for? it is in immaculate condition to the naked eye and runs quite well, even at 70mph.
deisel, classy...2 owners who are friends

thank you:)

Try to find out if it uses oil. Also, pull up the front/rear carpet and look for rust. $1000 sounds like a deal if there is no rust.

I love to hear stuff like this...

I hope the car's nice and that it works out for you. Floor repairs are common, but shouldn't be expensive.

Frank Barrett's "Mercedes-Benz Buyers Guide" has a lot of stuff in it on what to look for and look out for, along with a very good marque history.

I think these cars were almost perfect, and love my '83 240D to the point just short of wanting to perform "unnatural acts" with it.

Good luck!

I would look out for another one at that price once you start a flock they breed.........

Since it is a 1980

it will have the dreaded acc servo for the ACC system. This device is a black box shaped object mounted to the passenger side of the engine on the fender inside the engine compartment. Check it over for leakage of any kind. Run the ACC system by first running on defrost, fan should be on high and you get fuill heating. Then push the high auto button, with the temp wheel all the way in the red, ensure that the vent flaps change over and the heat continues to blow from the side vents and floor vents. Then turn the wheel all the way to the stop on the blu side, the fan should continue to clow but the temp should cool. Next push the low button, make sur ethe fan slows accordingly, finally push the compressor switch and see that the ac compressor starts running and the air turns cold.

The other things are:
easy starting when cold
while running undo the oil filler cap slowly and see if it has just a wisp of white smoke or if it sounds like a freight train is coming out of the valve cover.

These are some basic checks to ensure that certain systems are running. Otherwise you might pay an independant mechanic to chek it out but for that mch money you might be fine anyway.

I have my indy check out my cars, make a list of fixes, then I do them myself when I can...

Good luck and it sounds like it might be a great find.

My goodness, Greg. The engine bay of your car is cleaner than the interior!

leathermang 06-23-2003 11:50 AM

I have not cleaned it in a year.... you should have seen it then...the pics of the vacuum diaphram repair showed how clean it was at that time....

UH... now that I think about it... I guess that could have been a slap at how bad the interior is....

Fisherman 06-23-2003 01:20 PM

What did you do just put in the manual controls from another car or did it come this way?

Rick Miley 06-23-2003 01:22 PM

The 240D came that way. Mine is the same.

MCC..manual climate control

Greg wouldn't let me close to his car so I had to go to the boneyard and come home with a pair of those valves...along with two sets of all the cables, control panels and other trinkets for the manual system.

In the not all that far off future Marlene and Lilly will get converted to manual heating and cooling...despite what the wizards of Stuttgart may believe, I'm pretty sure that I can figure out when to turn the a/c on and the heater off by myself.

Now, if I can just get that 3VZ-E on the road....

leathermang 06-23-2003 02:22 PM

Randy, We both know that if I had let you get close to my car it would have slowed down your berry picking....Season is too short.. could not allow that....

LarryBible 06-23-2003 03:52 PM

The climate control was an option (I think) on a 240D. At least I've never seen a 240D with anything except manual a/c controls. That's just one more reason to have a four cylinder instead of a five IMHO.

Have a great day,

Palangi 06-23-2003 10:54 PM

Somebody out there in aftermarketland sells a kit for converting an ACC system to MCC. If I can find the link again I will post it.
