I wouldn't mind looking for the same thing for the compressor on my 83 300SD - does it have the same type of compressor - how can I verify what is on it?

You have an R4 Harrison AC Delco (and other manufacturers, now) compressor in your 1983 300SD.
Previous companies mentioned have shaft seals for this common GM compressor. This may help also: http://trotliner.tripod.com/ac.html
