I stand corrected! The o-rings were actually $1.10 each list price.

Last night I did swap the o-rings on the filter stem. This morning,
I did observe my oil pressure increasing more rapidly than before.
The oil pressure increases faster, stays somewhat higher during short bursts of idle (at a light, for example) and decreases more slowly when shutting down.

My old o-rings weren't rock hard, but they were flat! I presume they were original.

Sorry I was away on business yesterday and did not check the board last night when I got home.

I have the same problems with the W124 CD manual I have. I hate the thing. There is no intuitive order to it and what they did is worse than just copying all the pages in order, like a book, with a table of contents that shows what is on each CD. And the graphics stink too.

Chris, I change my Delvac 1 at 5,000 to 6,000 miles anyway. I agree, with so many years of 3,000 mile changes going more than twice that mileage causes more anxiety than letting $30 slip out of my pocket.

Rick - it wasn't until I got my E300D TurboDiesel and started changing the stem O-rings at each oil change that I got sensitized to the need to check them on the 240D again. I agree, since all the versions and combinations of sealing rings sets (the silver colored ring is for the old style filter housing single clamping bolt, and the smaller copper washer goes to the oil cooler drain bolt, neither of which are used on many cars) are in the package, why skimp on these O-rings? If they were in the package they would add pennies to the cost. As it is now they have to be stocked and part numbered separately which ends up being the bulk of that $1.10.

Good luck, Jim

The money isn't the issue. Of course it's only a buck. The problem is that I have to buy them separately. As soon as I bought the 240D I stocked up on oil filters along with some other goodies from Fastlane / PartsShop. Of course I didn't buy the rings, so now I either have to place another order or go to the dealer and buy them. It's a real PITA for something that should just be included.

I have no idea what to buy off fastlane. I looked around on there, and the way parts are named it is hard to figure out what is what. I'm not even sure what all I should replace at this point.

Mobil1 Delvac 1300

I see where everyone refers to Mobil1 Delvac 1 oil, I was in my local Wally World last Night and saw Mobil1 Delvac 1300. Same stuff or not? Just curious, I think it stated meets Mercedes 228.3 (not sure of the spec number) specification. Any info on this?
Thanks

190D22,

I am not sure about your oil filter housing and the flow path through the filter. In the older cars the upper 3/4 of the filter itself is really a bypass filter, and the bottom quarter is the main flow filter. The rod that passed through the center of the filter, (and on most W123 cars is usually attached to the filter housing cap, which is then held in place by two fasteners that pass through ears 180* from each other at the outer rim), has a small hole drilled radially through one side most of the way up to the cap. The by-pass oil goes through this hole after the filter, and down the center of the rod to a path to the oil pan. The two small O-rings fit on the bottom of this rod that goes through the center of the oil filter. They seal the main oil filter flow from the "do nothing for your engine bearings" path to the oil pan and force the majority of the flow that cannot run through the little throttling orifice in the side of the center rod to pass through the main filter and then on to the bearings and other engine parts that need to be cooled and lubricated.

In my 1998 E300D TurboDiesel there is no similar by-pass oil filter flow path, but the center "rod" is now a plastic substitute, that has a plug at the bottom sealed by two similar O-rings. I presume they are there for a similar reason, to make the oil in the filter housing stay there after you shut the engine off. Your car may be different than either of these but check the center rod out and if your car has such a feature the O-rings in question go on the bottom. Hope this helps.

jerryyoung,

Mobil Delvac 1300 is "dino" oil, good "dino" oil to be sure, but still "dino" oil. It comes in a black gallon jug. Delvac 1 is synthetic and comes in a silver jug. Jim

I want to drag this thread up so I can rant again.

[RANT]
I finally went to the dealer this morning about something else, and while I was there I asked for those filter stem rings at the parts counter. I said I would take 6 so they would last me a while. You know how many they had in stock? 3!

How many OM616 and 617 engines are running around out there? If they won't put the stupid things in with the oil filter, then at least the dealer could keep them in stock.
[/RANT]

Just for the record, I bought 2 and the price was $1.72 including sales tax. The part number is A 015 997 94 48 under MB's new part numbering scheme.
