accursed rubber stip on 300D bumper
 

It's another sad tale of the rubber strip on the (83 300D) bumper loosening, and departing from the plastic mounting strips. I therefore bought replacement mounting strips, foolishly believing that I could simply reattach the rubber strip to them. But no...as in most of these simple things, there's a trick, and I don't know what it is...how about some procedural advice from the vast diesel conspiracy?

Yes, there's a trick. It is very simple to do if you ROLL it on.

Start at one end and push the groove over the plastic mount, then just start rolling and pushing a small portion at a time into place. If it's still too tough for you (it takes effort) then mix some dishwashing soap and water to lubricate as you go.

Larry's right about rolling it on but maybe this explanation helps to better understand what he's saying. Double the rubber strip in a "U" shape with the "T" slot on the outside of the "U". This spreads the slot open so it slips right over the plastic "T" on the bumper. So you just work the roll right along the bumper.

Once it's in place you can smack it with a rubber mallet to shift it one way or the other to get the spacing right.

BTW, the older bumpers had no plastic "T" on them, they were all one piece metal. Get one if you ever have the chance.

good suggestions. I ran into this same problem this past weekend. Pops had to drill and screw those plastic pieces then used soap to install rubber part. Rubber mallet is a great suggestion. GL and hope you fix it.

I normally start off by sliding it on in the middle, then work it the rest of the way with a rubber mallet. I tried ordering the plastic pieces from performance products but the ones they sent me didn't fit :rolleyes:.... I used another screw or two but now it isn't even, I guess I have to track down another seller of those strips.
