Need some advice on a 83 300CD

I found a 83 300CD in the neighborhood for sale. It has 238K on it but it is clean. Still trying to get more information on it. What is a fair price on this if it runs and drives good? My yellow submarine (79 300SD) runs great, but is getting pretty rusty.

How different is the CD from an SD except the four doors?

The Cd is based on the 300D W123 chassis, only the weelbase is reduced by 4" over the sedan.

Problems to look out for above and beyond the usual climate control issues that are native to these cars, are:

Vacuum actuated seat back latches

and

rear quarter window regulators

These 2 items are unique to these cars, make sure they work. MB only made about 2500 of these per year, but the relative rarity does not translate into much of a price difference over the sedan.

THat having been said, I really like the looks of these cars!

Peter,

I've had (2) CD's one an '82 and my current '83. I've really not had any problems other than replacing the vacuum pump on the '82.

My '83 is in very good condition and has never given my any problems.....but I've only had that one for 7 months. If you do buy the '83 you're currently looking at, I'm almost ready to part out my '82.

Thanks for the reply, Do you have any idea what would be a good price for one. Body is clean, tires average, interior is ok except Drivers side seat is ripped. Has conventional oil and dirty engine pan, but looks pretty good. 238K. Is the engine the same as a 300SD?

I turned down a '83 turbo coupe with decent body & paint, dirty interior, a few missing bits here and there.

Had 126K on the engine, barked the tires on the 1-2 shift even when I didn't try to. Super strong engine.

Only downside was it was a salvage title. Asking price was 2800, I should have offered 2400, probably would have gotten it.

Peter,

I would imagine $2400 - 2800 would be a decent price for the car you describe......but that's entirely up you. I paid more than that for my '83 - it was in very good shape and had 155k miles. I've read about folks on this site getting a great car for around $1K and others who pay up to 5K. I guess price may be a combination of luck and just a wee bit of emotion.

If you decide to buy and the interior is blue MB Tex , the driver seat from my '82 is in decent shape. It does have the traditional rip (about 3" long) on the back of the drivers seat - door side.
