Waterpump question?

I noticed that there is a small hole on the top of my waterpump housing. I am wondering if this is for lubricating the waterpump bearing? The other possibility is that someone put the outer housing on upside down and it is supposed to the a weep hole like other waterpumps have.
Any ideas? If oiling the bearing will prolong the life of the pump, I am all for it.
