Anyone in St Petersburg??
I've found a 1977 240D "manual everything" with 175K miles on it that I am considering buying and bringing back to Cincinnati. The car is located in St Petersburg, FL, and is offered by a private seller.
According to the seller: -new starter, battery, belts, brakes and master cylinder, but will need vacuum work in near future. Is there anyone local to St Petersburg that can swing by, take a look, and give me an honest opinion? Of course, I would be willing to pay you for your time... Also, does anyone know of an inexpensive way of transporting the car to Ohio??? Please email me at bppierson@yahoo.com THANKS!! Brian |

check out Hemmings
Brian,
I had a car transported from NC to Buffalo NY for about $400 around 8 years back. I found many transporters listed in Hemmmings Motor News (either the brown magazine or the on-line). It helps if you are not in a hurry and can help a transporter fill up a load. Chuck |

Brian and I have been corresponding about this privately, and I'm going to look at the car for him on Monday. But I wanted to say this publicly.
The cheapest way to get the car home is to fly down here and drive it. If you're concerned about whether or not the car will make it, don't be. The reason the "manual everything" 240D is so highly regarded here is because there is so very little to go wrong with it. My 240D was driven nearly nonstop from New York City to Tampa, and I suspect it was in much worse condition than the one you're considering. We'll know more on Monday.

Rick's Right!!!
Brian -- Rick's right; fly down and drive it home! Flights to Tampa International are cheap if you shop around... and St. Pete is a great place to visit! And again, if you check around, you CAN get a reasonably-priced hotel room down there. Try the nifty old Mom & Pop type places on 4th Street, and go eat at the 4th Street Shrimp Shop. Rick can give you more tips.
I used to live in Tampa (on the Air Force Base) back in High School; St. Pete is a great place to hang out! I have been back to visit a couple of times and loved every trip. And there is nothing more romantic than driving a NEW (to you) can home. Benzies were made for long road trips; I have been hoping to find a nice 190D 5-speed to buy, fly-in, and drive home this summer. Pack some tools just in case, and enjoy the trip! I'm envious of you!!! Chris |

He doesn't need a hotel room, he can stay with me. We'll even make sure the car is in great shape before he leaves. Anything (within reason ) for a fellow 240D owner.

Say, Rick, old pal, wanna find me a 190D? Mid-80's 5-speed would be just fine! Is the 4th Street Shrimp Shop still open? How 'bout the Banyan Tree Hotel? Man, I miss St. Pete... we used to go play on Madeira Beach 'til the sun rose. Those were good times!
Take care, Chris |

Sorry, I only work in St. Pete. I don't play here much. I actually live in Land O Lakes, which is just north of Tampa. That'll give Brian a head start when he heads home. Brian, I'm about 15 minutes from I-75, and you'll already be past the Tampa traffic.
