Wow, all that clanking wasn't normal!!!

I was checking my air filter when i noticed my intake manifold was a bit loose! I'm not sure how this was possible with the exhaust manifold being tight, when they share the same bolts and gasket. I tightened the bolts just a bit with a small driver, no more rattling manifold, my car is soooo much quiter, and fewer things in the cabin vibrate.

My question is this, Is the exhaust manifold overtightened now?, If I got a new gasket, torqued the manifold bolts properly, and the intake was still loose, what then?

If bothe manifolds are OK now, leave them alone. You fixed the problem so now it ain't broke so don't try to fix it.

You might check it periodically to make sure it doesn't get loose again.

If you did that it would mean you had not cleaned up the holes and lightly lubed your threads.. that caused you to reach your torque figures without getting the pulldown effect you should from the interpolation the engineers have figured into that relationship.

I've got the exact same deal-clanking I hear in tight squeezes and parking garages. Good to know the problem is easy to fix-I'm on it this week.

Wait, so the clanging around was caused by the intake being loose and not by the air cleaner mounts being loose/broken?

I've got a lot of clanging, but both of my remaining air cleaner mounts are loose (thread stripped in part, so it's impossible to tighten them)...I want to go to some variation of DieselHead's air intake setup, but I'm trying to figure out how to make the open-element air cleaner work with some form of ram-air...
